English Translations of Shen Congwen's Stories: A Narrative Perspective

This book investigates the English translations of Shen Congwen’s stories. Shen Congwen (1902–1988) is one of the most acclaimed writers in modern Chinese literature. His works have been translated into more than ten languages and his 44 stories count with 70 different English translations. Adopting a case study method within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies, the author selects and compares the most translated stories, those with three or more translations, totalling fifteen translations from four stories. The analysis of the texts focuses on Shen’s narrative style – his narrative commentaries and his lyrical narrative mode – to see how his style was re-presented in translation. In addition, the translators’ overt narrative intrusions – their added notes – are also examined.
Further, on the basis of Bourdieu’s sociological concepts, especially habitus, this study makes an attempt to interpret the different strategies adopted by different translators, including scholar/non-scholar translators, L1/L2 translators, and translators of the 1930s and 40s and those of the 1980s onwards.

Legilinguistic Translatology

With the purpose of making the process of legal translation accessible to investigation, the author resorts to the parametrization of translational reality as an inalienable component of her translational theory being proposed here for consideration. The aim is to propose a more precise theory of legilinguistic translation which compels the author to clearly distinguish primitive terms and postulates. These latter specify the image (model) of the reality in question in terms of relevant dimensions used to characterize a set of translational objects and relations. Anabel Borja Albi is Head of the Translation Department at Jaume I University, Spain, where she teaches legal translation and co-ordinates research in the field of legal translation, genre analysis and expert knowledge management systems for specialized translation. As sworn official translator appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she has also worked as an in-house and freelance translator.
Fernando Prieto Ramos is Professor of Translation and Co-Director of the Translation Department at the University of Geneva’s Faculty of Translation and Interpreting, where he teaches legal and economic translation at postgraduate level. The author of numerous publications, he also has extensive experience as a sworn translator, an in-house translator at the World Trade Organization and a freelance translator for other organizations.

Author Bio

Silvia Bruti is Associate Professor of English language and translation at the University of Pisa. She has published widely in the areas of text linguistics, discourse analysis, (historical) pragmatics, corpus linguistics and translation. She has recently conducted research on the translation of compliments, terms of address and conversational routines in interlingual subtitling and dubbing.
Elena Di Giovanni is Lecturer in translation at the University of Macerata, where she is also Director of the Language Centre and of the international MA in Accessibility to Media, Arts and Culture. Her research interests include translation as intercultural communication, translation and postcolonialism, and audiovisual translation. She has published extensively on subtitling, dubbing and audio description and has been working as a professional audiovisual translator for over twenty years.

Author Bio

Agnieszka Szarkowska, PhD, is an assistant professor at the Institute of Applied Linguistics at the University of Warsaw. She is the founder and head of the research group Audiovisual Translation Lab (AVT Lab). Her recent research projects include an eyetracking study on subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing, audio description in education, text-to-speech audio description, and audio description to foreign films. A freelance subtitler and translator, she is also a member of ESIST and honorary member of the Polish Audiovisual Translators Association (STAW).

Author Bio

Isabel García-Izquierdo is Professor of Translation Studies in the Department of Translation and Communication at the University Jaume I, Spain, where she teaches applied linguistics and Spanish language. Since 2000, she has been head of the GENTT (Géneros Textuales para la Traducción) research team that focuses on the multilingual analysis of textual genres. She is the author of Análisis textual aplicado a la Traducción (2000), Divulgación médica y traducción (2010) and Competencia textual para la traducción (2011); and the editor of El género textual y la traducción (2005).
Esther Monzó is Senior Lecturer in Legal Translation in the Department of Translation and Communication at the University Jaume I, Spain. She is also an official certified translator and a temporary translator at the Geneva office of the United Nations and other international organizations. Her research focuses on the sociological aspects of translation.

This book addresses a gap in the study of audiovisual translation (AVT) carried out in minority languages by exploring the role played by translations appearing on the Basque Public Broadcasting Service in the promotion and development of the Basque language. Using the framework provided by descriptive translation studies, the author illustrates the socio-cultural context of AVT in the Basque Country, focusing on the dubbing from English to Basque of television animation for children.
The most innovative aspect of the book lies in its cultural and descriptive approach. Following a corpus-based descriptive methodology, the study establishes a set of criteria for a contextual and linguistic analysis that embraces both the cultural and linguistic dimensions of translation and allows source texts to be compared with their translated versions at the macro- and micro-structural levels. The book uniquely offers a broad overview of the cultural context as well as a detailed analysis of the linguistic properties of the dubbed texts.

Author Bio

Josu Barambones Zubiria is a lecturer in the Department of English and German Philology and Translation and Interpretation at the University of the Basque Country in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. He has a PhD degree in Audiovisual Translation, with particular emphasis on the dubbing into Basque of television animation for children. He is a member of the Association of Translators, Correctors and Interpreters of the Basque Language (EIZIE).
