This slim volume offers ESL teachers a chance to enrich their pedagogy both through new strategies and through a deeper understanding of their learners.
—TESL-EJ

Panettas book breaks new ground and enlarges the scope of contrastive rhetoric....One of the impressive features of this volume is its organization of well-selected articles. It is an accomplishment to revisit and redefine contrastive rhetoric so well in a slim volume....has made a significant contribution to the field of contrastive rhetoric, and it is timely and up to date. It is a valuable resource for anyone who is engaged in writing research and instruction.

Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Constraint-based theories of grammar and grammar formalisms are becoming an increasingly widespread area of research in computational linguistics. Constraint-Based Grammar Formalisms provides the first rigorous mathematical and computational basis for this important area. It introduces new applications to both natural and computer languages and brings together Stuart Shieber's many contributions that have been at the core of developments ranging from the discovery of improved explanations of linguistic phenomena such as binding and coordination to the detailed mathematical analysis of constraint-solving and parsing in a variety of grammar formalisms.

This thorough examination of the theoretical and computational foundations of constraint-based grammars and applications to natural-language analysis is unique in several respects. Shieber's theoretical framework may be applied to a whole class of formalisms with properties that make it possible to define a general parsing algorithm for all members of the class, with results that provide essential guidance to the implementer of constraint-based language processing systems. Shieber also brings out new connections between grammatical categories and data types, and between constraint-based natural-language analysis and type inference in computer languages. These connections should be of increasing interest both to computational and theoretical linguists and to computer scientists.

Stuart M. Shieber is Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Harvard University.

Product Description
Using the Web as Corpus is one of the recent challenges for corpus linguistics. This volume presents a current state-of-the-arts discussion of the topic. The articles address practical problems such as suitable linguistic search tools for accessing the www, the question of register variation, or they probe into methods for culling data from the web. The book also offers a wide range of case studies, covering morphology, syntax, lexis, as well as synchronic and diachronic variation in English. These case studies make use of the two approaches to the www in corpus linguistics - web-as-corpus and web-for-corpus-building. The case studies demonstrate that web data can provide useful additional evidence for a broad range of research questions.

This book, for foreign students, is a guide to the composition of idiomatic English. Idiom is as much a matter of correct word order as of wide vocabulary or knowledge of syntax: and in this book Mr Hornby describes and tabulates the chief English sentence and phrase patterns, and sets down the numerous idiomatic ways of expressing time - relations and other common concepts.

Summary: excellent
Rating: 5

It is excellet to know Idioms, you can't leave without and this book it is excellent to learn about it.

Summary: Just what we needed
Rating: 5

This is a useful and interesting book for advanced ESL students, and they love it. These students have learned all the grammar and now they want to be able to use and understand all the slang and idioms. Also they get enough practice with each idiom to realy let it sink in.

Summary: Great book
Rating: 5

I first came across this book at borders and while i was looking for the slangman series, i decided to take a look at this book and i just couldn't put it down. Not only is it applicable to high school and college students, it puts the idioms in a context which makes the user understand it's usage for future purposes. I wish i'd seen this book when i first came here as an exchange student.
I think it'll be a great gift for that friend of yours who's visiting the country or here on an exchange program. It's a little pricy but i think it's worth the price. If you are learning english, try to learn the idiomatic expressions to improve your overall communication.

Summary: You HAVE to get this book for your ESL students, particularly advanced students
Rating: 5

I am an English teacher in Japan and I was looking for a book that had a lot of useful, everyday English for my students that covered material not usually taught in the language schools. After searching many book stores I still had no book to use for my students. I really thought I was going to have to write my own book. Then, one of my students came to me with this book. I was amazed that she was the one who came across such a good book. I felt like one of my friends won the lottery. After flipping through a few pages I knew I had to order it. I ordered it that night and use it almost exclusively for our lessons. The students love the content. The exercises are fun, simple, yet effective in helping students retain the new material. The layout is perfect, particularly if you need to make a copy from the copy machine when you are in a pinch for material needed in an unexpected class. The choice of content in this book is excellent. My lessons with this book now give the students a lot more useful English phrases to speak like a native English speaker, and understand a lot of idioms Americans use.

Summary: Valuable addition to ESL resources
Rating: 5

Among the many difficulties faced by English as a Second Language learners is our seemingly random used of words and phrases to express ideas. Our idioms are opaque (chicken out, spare tire), slang changes before the dictionary can catch up (wimp, freak out), and many words are rarely used, except in a specific circumstance (bawling, hilarious).
What is the poor ESL learner to do?
Edward J. Francis has come to the rescue with A Year in the Life of an ESL Student - Idioms and Vocabulary You Can't Live Without. (Trafford)
Following Andre, a student from Switzerland, through 16 chapters of activities ranging from suntanning on the beach to catching a movie, the 300-page text is filled with dialogues, definitions, crosswords and cloze activities, not to mention comprehension and discussion questions. Everything is well laid out and easy to read. There are web sites listed for each chapter, answer keys and an extensive glossary with definitions and page references. All that is missing is a CD recording of the conversations.
This book would make an ideal extension resource for the Advanced ESL class.

Summary: Theory&Practice Together
Rating: 5

I'm currently in a discourse analysis seminar, and Dr. Johnstone is my teacher, so I get the interesting experience of having the textbook author at hand. That being said, I don't think it makes much of a difference in the utility of the textbook. It is an emminently clear, very readable introductory work that allows the reader to jump into practice with each aspect of theory introduced.

As a discourse analysis practitioner I will want to go deeper into the primary texts that are introduced in this work, but I have still been able to understand and apply methodologies that are intorduced, in practice, on selections of discourse I've chosen. I really like that aspect of the textbook--here's some theory that can be grouped in some way, here are some methodologies that are amenable to this approach, and here's soem examples that you can model off of.

As a student coming from an entirely literary critical background--no linguistics, communication, semiotics, even grammar in my background--I was really worried at the start of the seminar. The textbook has been a huge help in allowing me to feel comfortable and make a large jump from what I already knew to what is very new territory for me.

Highly recoomend this as the base text for a seminar in DA.

Current Issues in Computational Linguistics: In Honour of Don Walker (Linguistica Computazionale ; Vol 9-10) (Hardcover)
by Antonio Zampolli (Editor), Nicoletta Calzolari (Editor), Martha Palmer (Editor)

Editorial Reviews
Product Description
This collection of papers is dedicated to Don Walker, a kind, gentle soul, and a man of intelligence and vision whom we have been privileged to know and to work with. The technical content of these papers clearly reflects his guidance and direction; his understanding of the relevance of the theories from related disciplines such as linguistics, psychology, and philosophy; and his dream of the future availability of electronic documents and the potential of this as a resource for corpus-based analysis. This led to one of his most interdisciplinary roles as a primary mover in the push to standardize the acquisition and tagging of electronic text, an endeavour that brought together people from fields as distinct as publishing, the humanities and computer science. His widespread interests are mirrored in the rich and diverse collection of papers in this volume which portray many different approaches and many different styles. These papers co-exist in harmony here, united by the goal of paying tribute to Don as well as actualizing part of his dream.

Critical Applied Linguistics: A Critical Introduction (Paperback)
by Alastair Pennycook (Author) "What is critical applied linguistics?..." (more)
Key Phrases: critical applied linguistics, restive problematization, problematizing practice, North American, Norton Peirce, United States (more...)

Editorial Reviews
Review

...attempts to map out the epistemological parameters of an applied linguistics infused with critical awareness....Pennycook investigates a gamut of theoretical fields to suggest ways of thinking about language and language education that go beyond the scientistic posturing and claims to truth and proof which are the basis of much of the research and teaching around language and particularly, English....the book clearly demonstrates the efficacy of the teaching/research nexus.
—Journal of Sociolinguistics

...correctly underscores the importance of historical perspective....Pennycooks approach is both disciplined and eclectic....this author is at once passionate and humble, open and committed. The book is articulate, balanced, and, most important of all, thought provoking....I would recommend it specifically to anyone interested in language and language teaching, and generally to anyone interested in the affairs of the polis and in how we train the next generation of citizens.
—The Modern Language Journal

...Critical Applied Linguistics is a comprehensive introduction to a very complicated branch of linguistics. I found the authors sections dealing with language planning and politics, the global role of English, and identity and subjectivity to be both informative and thought-provoking....each chapter contains useful charts that greatly help to illustrate the main points being made.
—Language in Society

Critical Applied Linguistics is a timely addition to a body of critical work in fields such as discourse analysis, ethnography, sociolinguistics and pedagogy....Those interested in the underlying assumptions of critical studies, in colonialism, resistance and third spaces, critical literacy, CDA, SLA, agency, identity, pedagogical frameworks, and inclusivity and exclusion through language use will find much of interest in Critical Applied Linguistics.
—Bilingual Education and Bilingualism

Alastair Pennycooks book is a very clear work that provides a chronological and evaluative perspective of the theories and social practices that have shaped applied linguistics in the domains of sociolinguistics, TESOL, second language education, literacy, discourse analysis, language in the workplace, and translation....This book is very useful for all those who want to learn about the different approaches in languages studies....Another example of the clarity of the book can be seen in the tables presented in all the chapters that provide visual aid and concise summaries.
—Studies: An International Journal

The Global English Style Guide: Writing Clear, Translatable Documentation for a Global Market
By John R. Kohl

* Publisher:SAS Press
* Number Of Pages:336
* Publication Date:2008-04-09
* ISBN-10 / ASIN:1599946572
* ISBN-13 / EAN:9781599946573

Product Description:

This detailed, example-driven guide illustrates how much you can do to make written texts more suitable for a global audience. Accompanied by an abundance of clearly explained examples, the Global English guidelines show you how to write documentation that is optimized for non-native speakers of English, translators, and even machine-translation software, as well as for native speakers of English. You'll find dozens of guidelines that you won't find in any other source, along with thorough explanations of why each guideline is useful. The author also includes revision strategies, as well as caveats that will help you avoid applying guidelines incorrectly.

Focusing primarily on sentence-level stylistic issues, problematic grammatical constructions, and terminology issues, this book addresses the following topics: ways to simplify your writing style and make it consistent; ambiguities that most writers and editors are not aware of, and how to eliminate those ambiguities; how to make your sentence structure more explicit so that your sentences are easier for native and non-native speakers to read and understand; punctuation and capitalization guidelines that improve readability and make translation more efficient; and howlanguage technologies such as controlled-authoring software can facilitate the adoption of Global English as a corporate standard.

This text is intended for anyone who uses written English to communicate technical information to a global audience. Technical writers, technical editors, science writers, and training instructors are just a few of the professions for which this book is essential reading. Even if producing technical information is not your primary job function, the Global English guidelines can help you communicate more effectively with colleagues around the world.

Summary: The Global English Style Guide: a review
Rating: 5

Many people who do not speak English as a first language struggle to understand English texts. Human translation is expensive. Machine translation frequently does not work. Global English offers a solution to these three related problems.

Many good style guides exist. Why do technical writers need another style guide? Unlike other style guides, this book covers grammatical structures, not only particular terms. The author writes clearly, and he explains the reasons for the guidelines. The book is not an academic paper. The guidelines are based on practical work at SAS Institute, where the author works.

Most technical writers know some of the guidelines already. For example, restrict the use of the passive voice, use language literally, and simplify the writing style. However, many guidelines may be new to some technical writers.

Both of the following sentences are grammatically correct:
* Set up the system.
* Set the system up.

Now, as far as possible, I always use the first structure, and keep the parts of a phrasal verb together. Keeping the parts of the verb together increases consistency, improves machine translation, and helps non-native speakers who do not know the particular verb.

The subtitle of the book refers to writing documentation. However, most of the guidelines apply to copywriting as much as to technical writing. All writers who want to reach a global audience, to decrease translation costs, or to make their texts as clear as possible will benefit highly from this book.

Summary: Very useful guide to writing English for a global audience.
Rating: 5

John R. Kohl's Global English Style Guide is a very useful resource for understanding the importance and practice of writing English for a global audience. In fact, it provides an exciting and passionate case for the value of language in technical documentation. The first chapter outlines the impact of Global English on costs, quality, and usability. It also examines the growing impact of machine translation. The rest of the book consists of a rich set of guidelines to follow. The most valuable part of the book, though, is the focus on before and after examples of sentences followed by discussions of why one solution is better than another. My only frustration with the book is that it does not serve well as a quick reference, which is what I would normally expect from a style guide. However, if I have to chose, I would much prefer to engage in the logic of the author's recommendations rather than just a prescriptive list of do's and don'ts.

Summary: Global English Style Guide
Rating: 5

My copy of "The Global English Style Guide" arrived last week. As soon as I began looking through it, I realized this is a book that Technical Communicators have long needed.

There has been a multitude of excellent articles and references dealing with writing English for localization. But I have never found a concise compilation of guidelines and explanations on writing Global English in a handy book format, until now. Kohl's book is well researched, easy to understand, has multiple entry points, and was written by somebody who knows the topic thoroughly.

If you write any kind of material in the English language that will be localized into another language, I recommend that you purchase Khol's book, read it, follow its advice, and keep the book handy on your shelf.

Product Description:

To paraphrase, of the making of syntactic categories there is no end. For any theory of syntax, questions arise about its classificatory scheme: what are the categories? What properties do they have? How do they relate to each other? Eleven essays address these questions by inquiring whether there is a clear distinction between lexical and functional categories, how syntactic categories relate to semantic categories, the relation between syntactic and morphological information, as well as other inquiries. Above all the essays highlight the centrality of questions about syntactic categories for a number of different theoretical frameworks.

Key Features
* Discusses a broad range of questions about syntactic categories
* Presents a number of theoretical frameworks

With speech act theory assuming a renewed importance in the field of literary studies and philosophy, Foundations of Speech Act Theory offers a timely, thorough and, above all, compelling examination of the complexities of illocutionary acts, performatives, and their phenomenological basis. Savas Tsohatzidis has collected an impressive range of international scholars on the subject.

Clearly demonstrating the relevance of speech act theory to semantic theory, the collection further interrogates the inability of pragmatic theories of illocution to properly locate such speech acts within the logic of phenomenology and intersubjectivity. Extending this analysis to the related discipline of philosophy, Tsohatzidis's contributors provide an elucidating investigation of problems lying outside the field of the philosophy of language, while also offering other alternative and rigorous perspectives for linguistic and philosophical inquiry.
