Linguistics of Political Argument: The Spin-Doctor and the Wolf-Pack at the White House (Routledge Studies in Corpus Linguistics) (Hardcover)
by Alan Partington (Author) "The research described in this work was conducted on a corpus of 48 briefings, comprising approximately 250,000 words of running text, whose transcripts were downloaded..." (more)
Key Phrases: White House, United States, President Milosevic (more...)
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
This book examines the relationship between the White House, in the person of its press secretary, and the press corps through a linguistic analysis of the language used by both sides. A corpus was compiled of around fifty press briefings from the late Clinton years. A wide range of topics are discussed from the Kosovo crisis to the Clinton-Lewinsky affair.
This work is highly original in demonstrating how concordance technology and the detailed linguistic evidence available in corpora can be used to study discourse features of text and the communicative strategies of speakers. It will be of vital interest to all linguists interested in corpus-based linguistics and pragmatics, as well as sociolinguists and students and scholars of communications, politics and the media.
About the Author
Alan Partington is Associate Professor of Linguistics in the Faculty of Political Science, Camerino University (Italy). He has published in the fields of phonetics, CALL, lexicology and corpus linguistics, and is the author of Patterns and Meanings: Using corpora for English language research and teaching (1998, Benjamins). He is currently researching ways in which corpus techniques can be used to study features of discourse.

An Introduction to English Syntax (Edinburgh Textbooks on the English Language) (Paperback)
by Jim Miller (Author)
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
A slim and useful student textbook for English syntax. Although most of the examples are from English, the book introduces general concepts which provide the necessary tools for a basic syntactic analysis of any language. It concentrates on topics that will remain useful to the student who does not go on to study linguistics but, say, literature or EFL teaching."& mdash; The Year's Work in English Studies In this revised and fully updated edition, Jim Miller covers the central concepts of syntax, which are applied in a wide range of university courses and business communication, teaching, and speech therapy. Miller handles concepts that are central to traditional grammar yet have been greatly refined over the past forty years: parts of speech and how to recognize them; constructions and their interrelationships; subordinate clauses and their different types; subjects and objects; agents and patients, and other roles. The volume identifies the links between syntax and meaning and between syntax and discourse. A new chapter especially focuses on the analysis of discourse, and the concluding chapter explores tense, aspect, and voice, topics that are central to the construction of texts and that are major to the learning of a second language. Miller also provides areas in which meaning and grammar closely interconnect. Key features: *Coverage of central themes with a wide application outside the study of syntax *Explains basic concepts, supported by a glossary of technical terms *Exercises and sources for further reading.
About the Author
Jim Miller is professor emeritus at the University of Edinburgh, where he had a personal chair in linguistics and spoken language. He works on the syntax and discourse organization of spoken and written language, grammar and semantics, standard and non-standard languages, and literacy.

Users of natural languages have many word orders with which to encode the same truth-conditional meaning. They choose contextually appropriate strings from these many ways with little conscious effort and with effective communicative results. Previous computational models of when English speakers produce non-canonical word orders, like topicalization, left-dislocation, and clefts, fail-either by overgenerating these statistically rare forms or by undergenerating. The primary goal of this book is to present a better model of when speakers choose to produce certain non-canonical word orders by incorporating the effects of discourse context and speaker goals on syntactic choice. The theoretical model is then used as a basis for building a probabilistic classifier that can select the most human-like word order based on the surrounding discourse context. The model of discourse context used is a methodological advance both from a theoretical and an engineering perspective. It is built up from individual linguistic features, ones more easily and reliably annotated than the direct annotation of a discourse or rhetorical structure for a text. This book makes extensive use of previously unexamined naturally occurring corpus data of non-canonical word order in English, both to illustrate the points of the theoretical model and to train the statistical model.

Category Neutrality 作者:Neal Whitman
"Feature neutrality" is an issue that has received much attention among linguists. For example, consider the sentence, "I have never, and will never, put my name on this document." Here, the verb 'put' acts simultaneously as a past participle (as in "have never put") and a base form (as in "will never put"), and is therefore said to be neutral between the two forms. Similar examples have been found for many languages.
The accepted wisdom is that neutrality is possible only for morphosyntactic features such as verb form, gender, number, declension class-not at the level of gross syntactic category, where the semantic differences are more significant. In other words, it has been claimed that "category neutrality," where a word or phrase is used simultaneously with more than one syntactic category, does not exist. (A famous example is the glaring ungrammaticality of this sentence, in which "can" is used simultaneously as a main verb and auxiliary verb: "I can tuna and get a new job.") In this book, however, Neal Whitman shows that category neutrality does exist in English. This not only challenges the current thinking, but also raises foundational questions about the nature of ambiguity.

Phonological Augmentation in Prominent Positions (Outstanding Dissertations in Linguistics) (Hardcover)
by Jennifer L. Smith (Author) "Phonological requirements sometimes hold specifically of material in phono-logically prominent or "strong" positions, such as stressed syllables or roots..." (more)
Key Phrases: Segmental Contrast Condition, Prominence Condition, Guhang Ifugao (more...)
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Phonologically prominent or "strong" positions are well known for their ability to resist positional neutralization processes such as vowel reduction or place assimilation. However, there are also cases of neutralization that affect only strong positions, as when stressed syllables must be heavy, default stress is inserted into roots, or word-initial onsets must be low in sonority. In this book, Jennifer Smith shows that phonological processes specific to strong positions are distinct from those involved in classic positional neutralization effects because they always serve to augment the strong position with a perceptually salient characteristic. Formally, positional augmentation effects are modeled by means of markedness constraints relativized to strong positions. Because positional augmentation constraints are subject to certain substantive restrictions, as seen in their connection to perceptual salience, this study has implications for the relationship between functional grounding and phonological theory.

Behavioral methods for investigating morphological and syntactic processing in children Harald Clahsen While most first language acquisition research to date has focused on the development of children’s linguistic competence, a number of research teams have also investigated the mechanisms children employ to process sentence-level and word-level information in real time, by applying experimental techniques familiar from the adult processing literature to children. My focus will be on children’s grammatical processing and on different kinds of behavioral tasks for investigating morphological and syntactic processing in children. The advantages of using on-line experimental techniques are that they allow us to tap into automatic uncons...

Introduction First language, first language bilingualism and language impairment competence Language acquisition is a well established discipline in the linguistic field, with the beginnings of research in this area going back at least to Ronjat (1916). Research conducted since Ronjat’s seminal work on bilingualism has led to a high degree of specialisation and to the birth of different schools. It is in monolingual acquisition that the three theoretical approaches are most at odds. Only relatively recently have scholars working on theoretical approaches to language acquisition become interested in the field of language impairment. The book primarily seeks to address the generative approach to language acquisition in the three main dom...

Introduction A common observation in research into language acquisition is that adult second language (L2) learners are not inevitably successful in acquiring the target L2, whereas child first language (L1) learners are. 1.1 Theoretical background This study has been inspired by the work of Tsimpli and Roussou (1991), Smith and Tsimpli (1995) and Hawkins and Chan (1997), who have suggested that although L2 learners have access to the principles of UG, they may have difficulty with certain parametric specifications. These assumptions are discussed in , and what follows is a brief sketch of the main ideas. Grammatical features defined in this way are not simply abstract labels used to describe the smallest building blocks of language.

Paths of Development in L1 And L2 Acquisition: In Honor of Bonnie D. Schwartz (Language Acquisition and Language Disorders) (Hardcover)
by Sharon Unsworth (Editor), Teresa Parodi (Editor), Antonella Sorace (Editor), Martha Young-Scholten (Editor), Bonnie D. Schwartz (Editor)
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
The main focus of generative language development research in recent decades has been the logical problem of language acquisition--how learners go beyond the input to acquire complex linguistic knowledge. This collection deals with the complementary issue of the developmental problem of language acquisition: How do learners move from one developmental stage to another and how and why do grammars develop in a certain fashion? Building on considerable previous research, the authors address both general and specific issues related to paths of development. These issues are tackled through considering studies of L1 and L2 children and L2 adults learning a range of languages including Dutch, English, French, German, Greek and Japanese.

Product Description
Complex Predicates in Nonderivational Syntax collects recent research in complex predicates within a variety of languages, such as German, Dutch, Italian, French, Korean, and Urdu. Recognizing that complex predicates is one of the most active research areas in nonderivational theories of grammar, contributors focus on diverse aspects of complex predicate phenomena, including order variation, constituency relations, interactions with other construction types, argument relations, and the syntax–morphology interface. Their concentration on issues of linguistically adequate description open these articles to those interested in syntax, semantics, morphology, computational linguistics, and natural language processing.
Key Features
* Essays written by the leading researchers in the field, including Ivan Sag
* Makes the clearest and most advanced statement to date about complex predicates

Auxiliaries: Cognitive Forces and Grammaticalization (Hardcover)
by Bernd Heine (Author)
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Offering a new perspective on auxiliaries in particular and language structure in general, this study argues that language cannot be explained satisfactorily with reference to linguistic variables alone; what is required in addition are extra-linguistic parameters relating to how we perceive the world around us, and how we utilize the linguistic resources available to us to conceptualize our experiences, and to communicate successfully. Rather than a closed, self-contained system, language is an entity that is constantly shaped by such external factors as cognitive forces, pragmatic manipulation, history, etc. These factors are responsible for the emergence of chain-like linguistic structures, and auxiliaries are typical examples of such structures, which Heine describes as grammaticalization chains. A limited number of concrete event schemas are discussed and these schemas are shown to be responsible for much of the linguistic diversity that auxiliary constructions exhibit in the languages of the world.

Professor Nigel Vincent, The University of Manchester Like the companion Concise Encyclopedia of Syntactic Theories, the Concise Encyclopedia of Grammatical Categories is a lucid and informative collection of articles, many of them written by leading scholars in the field. It not only provides an excellent introduction for the beginning or for the interested outsider, but is full of original and thought provoking insights that will stimulate even seasoned researchers in the field. I particularly like the way many of the entries range widely over a number of different languages, and thus reveal the richness and variety of the grammatical structures attested in the languages of the world and integrate them into a general picture of the phenomenon in question. Very valuable too are the detailed and up-to-date bibliographies that accompany each article. This is a must for every departmental and reference library.
