The Highly Selective Dictionary of Golden Adjectives: For the Extraordinarily Literate (Hardcover)
by Eugene Ehrlich (Author)
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Adjectives have long suffered from bad press. For many years, English teachers have been fond of telling students that "adjectives are the enemy of nouns, and adverbs are the enemy of everything else."
While it's still advisable to heed your English teacher's advice on most other matters, The Highly Selective Dictionary of Golden Adjectives for the Extraordinarily Literate proves that breaking certain rules can make written and spoken language that much livelier, adding much-needed color, style, and adornment. With this addition to the popular Highly Selective series, the "golden" adjective, at last, gets the star treatment it deserves. From adventitious to zaftig, renowned lexicographer Eugene Ehrlich has collected more than 850 of the most interesting and engaging adjectives in the English language and has provided concise definitions and instructive usage examples. Whether you're a writer, a speaker, or a word buff, this compendious, trenchant, laudable, and all-around fantabulous volume will help you put panache back into your prose.
About the Author
Eugene Ehrlich, formerly a member of the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, is the coeditor of The Oxford American Dictionary and the author of dozens of books, including Veni, Vidi, Vici and the classic bestseller Amo, Amas, Amat and More. He lives in Mamaroneck, New York.

World English: From Aloha to Zed (Hardcover)
by Robert Hendrickson (Author)
Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
Around the world, more than a billion people speak English, some fluently and some with only a passing familiarity. Here Hendrickson has compiled a fair representation of words spoken by English speakers of many types, balancing the number of words with the detail of their definitions in a single-volume dictionary. Hendrickson's love of the English language is apparent in his unusual presentation of the book's entries, which provide etymology and region of origin. The heavy emphasis on words from North America and the British Isles is, however, unfortunate. Many sources already cover idioms and expressions from these regions, and the expressions that have gained popularity in places where English is spoken less than perfectly are often the most interesting and illuminating. Hendrickson's previous 25 books include Salty Words, a book about sailors' lexicon, and Animal Crackers, about words we have derived from our relationships with animals. While his latest is entertaining and informative, it is not a topnotch reference book. Manya Chylinski, Ernst & Young Ctr. for Business Knowledge, Boston

The study uses sociocultural and critical/poststructural theoretical perspectives to explore the intimate connection between learning, identity and social membership in Hari's learning path. Language Minority Students in the Mainstream Classroom\
Language Minority Students in the Mainstream Classroom (Bilingual Education and Bilingualism No 7) (Paperback)
by Angela L. Carrasquillo (Author), Vivian Rodriguez (Author)
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
INTRODUCTION This book begins to address the need facing many educators in the United States and other countries in the English-speaking world, how to teach students whose primary language is not English. The purpose of this book is to make mainstream educators aware that language minority students, especially the limited English proficient (LEP), need special attention: appropriate assessment, appropriate language environment, a challenging curriculum and a creative delivery of instruction relevant to their English language development as well as their performance in subject matter content and skills. The book has been written from the perspective of helping educators in the mainstream classroom to integrate language and content areas into classrooms where there are language minority students who are not totally proficient in the English language. Schools impose many language demands on all students, requiring them to use and think about language in ways unlike those of many LEP students' homes. These demands involve the conventions of reading and writing as well as the verbal and non-verbal conventions of the interactions in which communication takes place in the classroom. Lack of understanding of the communicative conventions that apply in the classroom may be an important factor in the poor school achievement of many language minority students. Limited English proficient students not only need to know the content of the correct answer but also how to present that answer in a way that will be socially acceptable to the teacher and the school community in general. As Jordan and Joesting (1983) say, "It seems reasonable to conclude that minority children, whatever their first language may be, often enter school with two strikes against them. Unlike the majority culture children, they must learn not only academic content but a new set of communicative conventions at the same time" (p. 217). At the classroom level, modifications are needed in the content and the manner teachers organise and deliver instruction to students and the way teachers assess language content learning. For this reason, all the chapters of this book give constant attention to the following general language principles: Vocabulary and technical terms associated with the subject matter; content (mathematics, social studies, and science) need to be consciously addressed in planning and delivering instruction; Language functions need to be carefully integrated into the curriculum for effective academic communication. These language functions include, but are not exclusive to informing, explaining, summarising, rephrasing, classifying, and evaluating; Each curriculum area has language structures and discourse features that are different and may impede LEP students' performance at high levels of cognitive functioning; There are different language skills emphasised in the classroom for different academic functions that may not yet be mastered by LEP students. Among these are included listening comprehension for academic explanations, reading for information, speaking for oral presentations, writing for presentation of written, or oral reports.
