Why We Talk: The Evolutionary Origins of Language (Studies in the Evolution of Language) (Hardcover)

Review
This is a provocative, erudite and enjoyable book, written to stimulate debate Raphael Salkie, THES
Product Description
Constant exchange of information is integral to our societies. Jean-Louis Dessalles explores how this came into being. He develops a view of language as an instrument for conversation rather than mental representation and thought. Presenting language evolution as a natural history of conversation, the author sheds light on the emergence of communication in the hominine congregations, as well as on the human nature.

Review
'The major strength of the book lies in the extent to which the grammaticalization processes noted are supported by data from a wide variety of languages and the degree to which languages of the world show striking similarity in the evolution of their grammatical forms. To this end this text makes a profound contribution. It succeeds in showing which lexical items are related to which grammatical forms ... As a reference work, this book will prove to be a useful resource for researchers interested in cross-linguistic patterns of grammaticalization.' Product Description:
A revival of interest in morphology has occurred during recent years. The Yearbook of Morphology series, published since 1988, has proven to be an eminent support for this upswing of morphological research, since it contains articles on topics which are central in the current theoretical debates which are frequently referred to.
In the Yearbook of Morphology 2002 a number of articles is devoted to the morphology of a variety of pidgin and creole languages which appear to have much more morphology than traditionally assumed.
A second topic of this volume is the morphological use of truncation for the coinage of proper names in Germanic and Romance languages, in particular endearment forms, with highly interesting consequences for the theory of phonology-morphology interaction.
Thirdly, this volume contains articles on how affixes are combined and ordered in complex words, and the complex linguistic principles behind these orderings.

Review
From the reviews:
"All of these articles reflect the "cutting edge" of morphological research, making this volume, like its predecessors in the same series, an important acquisition for any linguist or librarian serious about keeping pace with morphological theory." (Edward J. Vajda, LANGUAGE, June 2005)
Product Description
A revival of interest in morphology has occurred during recent years. The Yearbook of Morphology series, published since 1988, has proven to be an eminent support for this upswing of morphological research, since it contains articles on topics which are central in the current theoretical debates, and which are frequently referred to. Thus it has set a standard for morphological research.
In the Yearbook of Morphology 2003 a large number of articles is devoted to the phenomenon of complex predicates consisting of a verb preceded by a preverb. Such complex predicates exhibit both morphological and syntactic behaviour, and thus form a testing ground for theories of the relation between morphology and syntax. Evidence is presented from a wide variety of languages including Germanic, Romance, Australian, and Uralic languages. A number of articles present historical evidence on the change of preverbal elements into prefixes. Topics such as grammaticalization, constructional idioms, and derivational periphrasis are also discussed.
In addition, this Yearbook of Morphology contains articles on morphological parsing, and on the role of paradigmatical relations in analogical change.

THE LANGUAGE OF SCHOOLING A Functional Linguistics Perspective Mary J. Schleppegrell Characterizing the Language of Schooling anguage is the essential condition of knowing, the process by which experience becomes knowledge. It offers a way of seeing how meaning and form are related in the different options available in the grammatical systems of the English language, and how knowledge is construed in the language of schooling. Developing the kind of knowledge that comes through schooling requires that students learn to use language in new ways.

In interlingual families, i.e. families with two or more languages involved, parents sometimes do not share the same language as their native language. In spite of this general expectation, however, great variation is found in the degree to which this potentiality is actualized. What causes such variation? Under what circumstances do some families choose to use both parents’ languages while others use only one? Unsuccessful cases, she argues, lacked parental and/or societal support.

Two major questions guide the research on reading. Why do some children learn to read easily and quickly, while others don’t learn to read at all? This makes learning to read exactly like trying to memorize the telephone directory. Most of this research comes from disciplines outside the field of reading, and provides an objective test of the theory. But there’s another way, one that involves a fatal shortcut.

All authors define terms, state chapter goals and questions to be addressed, and provide outstanding references. Essential." Choice "In the diverse and complex field of 'bilingualism' this Handbook is a welcome new resource. Combining a presentation of fundamental issues with a wide sampling of offerings by major scholars actively pursuing many areas related to bilingualism, it provides the teacher, student, researcher, or lay reader with a valuable foundation in the field. The Handbook is especially welcome now, as the issues which underlie the collection are exceptionally current." Barbara C. From the point of view of the star-studded list of contributors, range of topics, and depth of treatment, it is difficult to think of any other study that can be a match for this volume. The book should be compulsory reading for scholars and students in all language-related disciplines." Ayo Bamgbose, University of Ibadan, Nigeria "From case studies of bilingualism in different parts of the globe, to socio-psychological discussions of bilinguals' language repertoires at the societal level, to psycholinguistic and neurocognitive investigations of bilingualism and biliteracy at the level of the individual, this comprehensive, multidisciplinary compendium of state-of-the-art overviews by prominent scholars in the field, ably edited by Bhatia and Ritchie, will be an invaluable resource for students, educators, and researchers of bi- and multilingualism for years to come." Product Description:
This book starts from three observations. First, the use of humour is a complex, puzzling, and idiosyncratically human form of behaviour (and hence is of scientific interest). Second, there is currently no theory of how humour works. Third, one useful step towards a theory of humour is to analyse humorous items in precise detail, in order to understand their mechanisms.
The author begins by considering how to study jokes rigorously: the assumptions to make, the guidelines to follow and the pitfalls to avoid. A critique of other work on humour is also provided. This introduces some important concepts, and also demonstrates the lack of agreement about what a theory of humour should look like. The language devices used in various jokes, such as puns or humour based on misinterpretation, are analysed in detail. The central part of the book develops, and demonstrates, proposals for how best to analyse the workings of simple jokes. Finally, the author makes some general suggestions about the language devices that seem to be central to the construction of jokes.
The Linguistic Analysis of Jokes will be invaluable for researchers and advanced students of humour research, linguistics and cognitive science.
