Translation Peripheries: Paratextual Elements in Translation

Authors: Gil-Bardají, Anna / Orero, Pilar / Rovira-Esteva, Sara (eds)
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2012
Pages: 196

Description

This book investigates different elements which have direct implications for translations but are not the actual text. These features are usually presented in a particular format - written, oral, digital, audio-visual or musical. They are furnished with, for example, illustrations, prologues, introductions, indexes or appendices, or are accompanied by an ensemble of information outside the text such as an interview with the author, a general or specialist press review, an advertisement or a previous translation.
However, the boundaries of paratextuality are not limited to the aforementioned examples, since paratextuality has a direct implication for areas as diverse as censorship, a contracting economy, decisions taken by the various actors in the political or cultural context in which the text occurs. Therefore it is obvious that most of the key concepts in Translation Studies cannot be fully understood without reference to the part played by paratextual elements, examined here taking into account different language pairs from Turkish to Catalan.
The content presented in this book is gathered from a conference on Paratextual Elements in Translation, held at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 2010.

Meaning and Translation

Author: Krzeszowski, Tomasz Pawel
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2012
Pages: 257

Description

Since translation cannot be approached in isolation from meaning, anything that is said about translation must necessarily be placed in the context of meaning. Accordingly, the first volume of the book concerns this necessary context, while the second volume will view translation in terms of the semantic framework presented in the first volume. Both volumes are to a large extent consistent with major tenets of cognitive linguistics. The work is addressed primarily to students pursuing translation studies but also to all those persons who are interested in semantics and translation for whatever other reasons. The main aim of the book is to provide the prospective reader with a quantum of knowledge in the two areas. A subsidiary aim is to tidy up the metalinguistic terminology, replete with such deficiencies as polysemy, whereby one term is laden with a number of senses, as well as synonymy, due to which one sense is connected with more than one term.

Contents

Meaning, semiotics and signs
– Semantics: its scope and its metalanguage
– The terminological principle and the cognitive approach to object language
– Aspects of linguistic meaning
– Semantic relations between sentences and between words
– Systemic meaning and utterance meaning
– Text and discourse
– Axiological elements of meaning.

Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2012
Pages: 320

Description

How are audiovisual translations made and received? This is just one of the questions this book offers answers to. Bringing together research on various forms of audiovisual translation, the range of issues treated is wide: How are discourse features translated in dubbed and subtitled programmes? Does subtitling enhance foreign language learning? Can the quality of audiovisual translation be assessed in a relevant way? What should we know about the audience? How should we audio describe? Audiovisual Translation in Close-up addresses these issues from a variety of perspectives: from discourse analysis and pragmatics to cognitive science, second language acquisition, actor-network theory and speech recognition, amongst others.
Most contributions to this volume originate from the international bilingual conference 獳udiovisual Translation: Multidisciplinary Approaches/La traduction audiovisuelle : Approches pluridisciplinaires

Translation and Philosophy

Authors: Foran, Lisa (ed.)
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2012
Pages: 188

Description

To what extent is philosophy reliant on translation and how does this practice impact on philosophy itself? How should philosophical texts be translated? Is translation inherently philosophical? Can philosophy be described as a 'type of translation'? The essays in this collection seek to respond to these intriguing and provocative questions. Exploring a wide range of issues, from the complexities of translating ambiguous philosophical terms to the role of language in concepts of identity and society, each essay highlights the manner in which the two disciplines rely on (and intersect with) each other. Drawing the collection together is an understanding of both translation and philosophy as practices which seek for meaning in our complex relationship with language and the world.

Interpreting naturally: A Tribute to Brian Harris

Authors: Blasco Mayor, María Jesús / Jimenez Ivars, María Amparo (eds.)
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2011
Pages: 242

Description

In this book, we aim to bring together seminal approaches and state-of-the-art research on interpretation as a tribute to Brian Harris’ influential legacy to Translatology and Interpreting Studies. Whenever Harris has sat down to reflect and write, he has paved the way to new approaches and promising areas of research. One of his most outstanding contributions is the notion of natural translation, i.e., the idea that all humans share an intuitive capacity to translate which is co-extensive with bilingualism at any age, regardless of language proficiency. This contribution has proved pivotal to translation and interpreting research. In a world where most individuals speak more than one language, and therefore millions of translational acts are performed every second by untrained bilinguals, the concept of natural translation provides the arena for T&I scholars to discuss issues directly related to or stemming from it, such as bilingualism, language brokering, community/public service and diplomatic interpreting, all of them paramount to interpreting research and the future of the profession.

Cultures in Contact: Translation and Reception of I Promessi Sposi in 19th Century England

Authors: Intonti, Vittoria / Mallardi, Rosella (eds.)
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2011
Pages: 407

Description

Cultures in Contact deals with the complex cultural relations surrounding the translation and reception of Alessandro Manzoni’s novel I promessi sposi (1827) in nineteenth-century England and a few years later in America.
The critical and methodological perspective of this study rests on the most recent developments and final convergence of Translation Studies and Cultural Studies, and considers translation as a privileged locus of exchange and negotiation of values and ideologies.
The book analyses the situation of the target and source literatures and cultures at the time of the early translations, focusing on the systemic factors determining the selection of texts for translation. Particular attention has been devoted to the receiving context, considering how and why in England and in America the impact of Manzoni’s work was less significant than in France and Germany. A notable intra- and inter-linguistic interdependency of the English and French translations of I promessi sposi developed, and, in this perspective, the influence that the early French and English versions exercised on the definitive edition of I promessi sposi appears today critically relevant.

Translating Dialects and Languages of Minorities: Challenges and Solutions

Authors: Federici, Federico M. (ed.)
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2011
Pages: 245

Description

This book offers a range of analyses of the multiplicity of opinions and ideologies attached to rendering, in familiar or unfamiliar voices, languages known as non-standard varieties. The contributions include theoretical reflections, case studies and comparative studies that draw from the full spectrum of translation strategies adopted in rendering non-standard varieties and reflect the endless possibilities of language variation.
The strength of the volume lies in the wide range of languages discussed, from Arabic to Turkish and from Italian to Catalan, as well as in its variety of complementary and contrastive methodologies. The contributions reveal the importance of exploring further issues in translating local voices. Discussing dialects and marginal voices in translation, the contributors encourage and challenge the reader to reflect on what is standard and non-standard, acceptable and unacceptable, thereby overturning accepted principles and challenging familiar practices.

Audiovisual Translation Subtitles and Subtitling: Theory and Practice

Authors: McLoughlin, Laura Incalcaterra / Biscio, Marie / Ní Mhainnín, Máire 羒ne (eds)
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2011
Pages: 288

Description

An increasing number of contributions have appeared in recent years on the subject of Audiovisual Translation (AVT), particularly in relation to dubbing and subtitling. The broad scope of this branch of Translation Studies is challenging because it brings together diverse disciplines, including film studies, translatology, semiotics, linguistics, applied linguistics, cognitive psychology, technology and ICT.
This volume addresses issues relating to AVT research and didactics. The first section is dedicated to theoretical aspects in order to stimulate further debate and encourage progress in research-informed teaching. The second section focuses on a less developed area of research in the field of AVT: its potential use in foreign language pedagogy.
This collection of articles is intended to create a discourse on new directions in AVT and foreign language learning. The book begins with reflections on wider methodological issues, advances to a proposed model of analysis for colloquial speech, touches on more 'niche' aspects of AVT (e.g. surtitling), progresses to didactic applications in foreign language pedagogy and learning at both linguistic and cultural levels, and concludes with a practical proposal for the use of AVT in foreign language classes. An interview with a professional subtitler draws the volume to a close.

CIUTI-Forum 2010: Global Governance and Intercultural Dialogue: Translation and Interpreting in a new Geopolitical Setting

Authors: Forstner, Martin / Lee-Jahnke, Hannelore (eds)
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2011
Pages: 408

Description

Since CIUTI Forums are intended to bring vocational university institutes into contact with the professional world to permit exchanges of experience, this 2010 FORUM (United Nations, Geneva) addressed once again the fact that new political and economic blocs have crystallised in recent decades that are more or less economically linked with one another (EU, ASEAN, MERCOSUR, ECOWAS, etc.). This should not, however, be interpreted in a purely politico-economic context, since consideration must also be given to cultural globalization, which renders intercultural dialogue necessary supported by qualified translators and interpreters who were gaining an important role as language mediators.
In accordance with CIUTI’s wishes, the contributors focused on the effects of the new political and economic global scene from different perspectives, among them the issue of effective and efficient training supported by novative approaches. The tasks of language services of the European Commission, the Russian Federation and Central Asia were dealt with, Asia’s driving forces in translation and interpreting were highlighted, namely China and its ASEAN neighbours. Finally, an attempt was made to create a link to economic geography which would make it possible to determine which regions favour the translation industry, which specialised areas have become leaders of international trade and which language combinations would be advisable.
This book contains contributions in English, French, and German.

Retranslation through the Centuries:Jules Verne in English

Author: O'Driscoll, Kieran
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2011
Pages: 286

Description

Making a contribution to the still under-researched translation history of Verne's Extraordinary Journeys, this book examines the causes of a selection of renderings from French into English of the 1873 Jules Verne novel Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours (Around the World in Eighty Days). This study integrates a number of methodologies in order to offer a comprehensive explanation of translation outcomes. It presents a diachronic investigation of the multiple interacting translation causes which have produced various retranslations of the same work.
A corpus of target texts, from 1873 to 2004, is analysed in order to discover the translation strategies employed and their likely causes using Pym's (1998) model of the four Aristotelian causes of social phenomena, as applied to translation. Translators' biographical details are studied to ascertain the agency of the translator. The book addresses the difficulties encountered in uncovering biographical information on certain translators, and the considerations involved in selecting a suitable corpus of retranslated texts. It provides some understanding of the reasons for which retranslations of a canonical novel are undertaken and contributes to arguments concerning translation universals.

Contents

Translation Studies
- Multiple causation of translation outcomes
- Norms of translation - Translatorial agency
- Retranslation theory
- Translation history
- Jules Verne Studies.

Author Bio

Kieran O'Driscoll was awarded his MA in 2006 and doctorate in 2010 by Dublin City University. He is a published literary translator and is currently engaged in a major project for the North American Jules Verne Society, translating, with a team of US-based Verne scholars, a number of Verne's lesser known literary works into English.

Translation Quality Assessment Policies from Galicia

Authors: Alonso, Ana Luna / Montero Küpper, Silvia / Valado Fernández, Liliana (eds)
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2011
Pages: 272

Description

This book is intended for readers who go beyond universal models of translation. Working from Galicia to the rest of Europe and the United States, the editors have focused on collecting contributions which address translation quality assessment and translation publishing policies.
Building on practice and research from both the professional and the academic realms, this book includes translation policies developed by government agencies and publishing houses, which are read critically by associations and scholars from and through their ethical, socio-cultural, and linguistic perspectives.

Translating Emotion: Studies in Transformation and Renewal Between Languages

Authors: Shields, Kathleen / Clarke, Michael (eds)
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2011
Pages: 164

Description

This collection of essays can be situated in a development that has been underway in translation studies since the early 1990s, namely the increasing focus on translators themselves: translators as embodied agents, not as instruments or conduits. The volume deals with different kinds of emotion and different levels of the translation process. For example, one essay examines the broad socio-cultural context, and others focus on the social event enacted in translation, or on the translator's own performative act. Some of the essays also problematize the linguistic challenges posed by the cultural distance of the emotions embodied in the texts to be translated.
The collection is broad in scope, spanning a variety of languages, cultures and periods, as well as different media and genres. The essays bring diverse questions to a topic rarely directly addressed and map out important areas of enquiry: the translator as an emotional cultural intermediary, the importance of emotion to cognitive meaning, the place of emotion in linguistic reception, and translation itself as a trope whereby emotion can be expressed.

CIUTI-Forum New Needs, Translators & Programs: On the translational tasks of the United Nations

Authors: Forstner, Martin / Lee-Jahnke, Hannelore (eds)
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2011
Pages: 240

Description

The United Nations have their own communicative culture in six languages ensuring effective communications in such a complex environment requires translators with a high level of translation competence. In addition, there is a growing demand for qualified translators with a strong command in communicative efficiency in the Arabic, Chinese and Russian languages.
Whereas the languages services of the United Nations are highly centralized, the educational systems of the universities are extremely diverse and decentralized. Effective and efficient multilateral collaboration with the United Nations has therefore become a priority for CIUTI institutes. How can universities collaborate more efficiently with the United Nations in order to train translators for specific needs especially in the present years in which many vacancies come up?
The CIUTI Forum took place in January 2007 at the United Nations in Geneva and was centered around the New Needs of the United Nations in language matters. Solutions to existing problems such as scarceness in certain language combinations as well as specific training needs pour UN-purposes were the main issues of this event. Within the framework of this Forum contributors emphasize the different approaches of how to integrate the new needs of the languages services of the United Nations into the training institutions, such as the importance of the necessary different forms of cultural communication in six languages in any kind of discipline. Special stress is put on the two main axes of communication: internal communication between experts and external communication with the broad public.
