English Translations of Shen Congwen's Stories: A Narrative Perspective

Author: Xu, Minhui
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2013
Pages: 207

Description

This book investigates the English translations of Shen Congwen’s stories. Shen Congwen (1902–1988) is one of the most acclaimed writers in modern Chinese literature. His works have been translated into more than ten languages and his 44 stories count with 70 different English translations. Adopting a case study method within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies, the author selects and compares the most translated stories, those with three or more translations, totalling fifteen translations from four stories. The analysis of the texts focuses on Shen’s narrative style – his narrative commentaries and his lyrical narrative mode – to see how his style was re-presented in translation. In addition, the translators’ overt narrative intrusions – their added notes – are also examined.
Further, on the basis of Bourdieu’s sociological concepts, especially habitus, this study makes an attempt to interpret the different strategies adopted by different translators, including scholar/non-scholar translators, L1/L2 translators, and translators of the 1930s and 40s and those of the 1980s onwards.

Contents

Introduction to Shen Congwen’s Life and Works – Scope and Approach of this Study – Narrative Commentaries – Lyrical Narrative Style – Paratexts in Narration – Translators’ Notes – Findings and Discussions.

Translating the Multilingual City: Cross-lingual Practices and Language Ideology

Author: Lee, Tong-King
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2013
Pages: 166

Description

Translation is a textual and discursive practice embedded in competing cultural identities and language ideologies; it is a site through which we can observe the operations and implications of language power. In this regard, multilingual societies provide fertile ground for the exploration of translation practice from the perspective of sociolinguistic tension.
This book examines the relationship between translation-mediated multi-literate practice and language ideology in multilingual Singapore. It problematises literary translation in light of the power relation between the official languages in the city-state, with special emphasis on English and Chinese. Based on published translations and multilingual anthologies, it investigates the implications of such power relations for intercultural communication through translation. The book also discusses how the translational problems that accrue from language ideology may contribute to a nuanced understanding of cross-lingual practice and to the realisation of intercultural knowledge in multilingual Singapore.

Contents

Assessment Issues in Language Translation and Interpreting

Authors: Tsagari, Dina / van Deemter, Roelof (eds.)
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2013
Pages: 198

Description

The need for reliable and valid assessments of translator and interpreter skills has been widely acknowledged inside and outside these professions and the (language) testing community. Despite this agreement, the actual assessments which serve as gatekeepers for professional translators and interpreters do not always live up to the expectations. The focus of the volume is on the assessment of translator and interpreter skills leading to authorization, accreditation, registration and certification in different countries of the world. Apart from the description of the different assessment systems, the chapters shed light on the intricate social, political and financial issues influencing the choices that lead to a specific kind of assessment.

Legilinguistic Translatology

Author: Matulewska, Aleksandra
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2013
Pages: 279

Description

With the purpose of making the process of legal translation accessible to investigation, the author resorts to the parametrization of translational reality as an inalienable component of her translational theory being proposed here for consideration. The aim is to propose a more precise theory of legilinguistic translation which compels the author to clearly distinguish primitive terms and postulates. These latter specify the image (model) of the reality in question in terms of relevant dimensions used to characterize a set of translational objects and relations. The dimensions secure a systematic examination of the translation reality and process. In order to illustrate the practical application of the parametrization in legal translation, the discussion concerning this translation approach is limited to certain selected types of legal communicative communities which is amply exemplified. The research is based on data and information gathered during an in-depth case study of translations and parallel text corpora mainly in the field of civil law including insolvency and bankruptcy law.

Film translation from East to West

Authors: Buffagni, Claudia / Garzelli, Beatrice (eds)
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2012
Pages: 381

Description

Observing filmic product translation from multiple perspectives is the challenging subject of this volume, which opens up new ways of reading and sustaining dialogue on both theoretical and didactic levels. Its central focus is an observation of European and Oriental languages, gathering together reflections on English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese, as well as specific languages for hearing-impaired Italians, also analysed in their relation to Italian language and culture.
The work focuses on audiovisual language, investigated in the linguistic and cultural dimensions and includes different genres: from election campaign commercials to short films, from animation films produced in the U.S. to Japanese anime, from classic musicals to television series, and finally European and extra European art-house films. Moreover, the volume assembles contributions concentrating both on the oral aspects dedicated to the study of the socio-cultural dimension (e.g. essays on diachronic and diastratic variations in Spanish films, also analysing specific dubbing problems) and on the written dimension represented by interlinguistic subtitles examined in their relationship with the original spoken text (e.g. German films).

Forms of Address in Polish-English Subtitling

Authors: Szarkowska, Agnieszka
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2013
Pages: 252

Description

This book is the first monographic study on forms of address in Polish-English subtitling from a multidisciplinary perspective. It departs from a contrastive analysis of forms of address in Polish and in English, then discusses the methodological tools and, finally, presents the empirical study on the translation of Polish forms of address in English TV subtitles. The study corpus contains nearly 100,000 words from three popular Polish soap operas and their English translations. Drawing on the methodological tools from descriptive translation studies, audiovisual translation and corpus-based research, the author presents a comprehensive survey of the translation techniques used by the subtitlers in rendering forms of address and discusses their implications. The book can be used by translation teachers, students and professionals.

Translating Virginia Woolf

Author: Palusci, Oriana (ed.)
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2012
Pages: 240

Description

Translating Virginia Woolf is a collection of essays that discusses the theory and practice of translation from an interdisciplinary perspective, involving research areas such as literature, linguistics, sociolinguistics, cultural studies, and history. It is the outcome of a selection of papers given at the international conference by the same title, held at the University of Naples 'L'Orientale' in 2010.
Interweaving literary threads and target languages such as Arabic, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, German, Italian, Serbian, Spanish, and Swedish, this volume traces the history of the translation and reception of Woolf's fiction and feminist pamphlets. It investigates the strategies of translation of several of her works in different countries and cultural contexts through the contrastive analysis of one or more editions of the same Woolfian text. The final result is a symphony of languages, spreading the notes of Virginia Woolf's modernist and feminist discourse across Europe and beyond.

Mapping the Dubbing Scene

Author:燵/b] Barambones Zubiria, Josu
Publisher: Peter Lang
Year of Publication: 2012
Pages: 177

Description

This book addresses a gap in the study of audiovisual translation (AVT) carried out in minority languages by exploring the role played by translations appearing on the Basque Public Broadcasting Service in the promotion and development of the Basque language. Using the framework provided by descriptive translation studies, the author illustrates the socio-cultural context of AVT in the Basque Country, focusing on the dubbing from English to Basque of television animation for children.
The most innovative aspect of the book lies in its cultural and descriptive approach. Following a corpus-based descriptive methodology, the study establishes a set of criteria for a contextual and linguistic analysis that embraces both the cultural and linguistic dimensions of translation and allows source texts to be compared with their translated versions at the macro- and micro-structural levels. The book uniquely offers a broad overview of the cultural context as well as a detailed analysis of the linguistic properties of the dubbed texts.

Contents

The linguistic and cultural context of the Basque language
