This is one of the best books on the American labor movement to come along in years. Written largely by academics in some of the top institutions of higher education, the book covers everything from the right to form unions to collective bargaining issues to law. The final three chapters are out-of-the-box think-pieces which rank alongide Charles Morris' "The Blue Eagle At Work" and Ellen Dannin's "Taking Back the Workers' Law" in their audacity and insight.
Some sections of the book, while excellent, largely recap work published elsewhere and in greater detail. For example, James Gross' chapter on "worker rights are human rights," Gangaram Singh and Ellen Dannin's chapter on legal strategies to "reclaim" the NLRB, and Charles Morris' chapter on members-only bargaining are examples. Nevertheless, for individuals who do not wish to read book-length treatments of these authors' works, these chapters are terrific.
Donald Wasserman, formerly the director of research and collective bargaining with AFSCME and former head of the Federal Labor Relations Authority, provides a superb chapter on public sector collective bargaining. It is a welcome and much-needed contribution to the labor literature, and should be required reading for any public sector labor negotiator (on both sides of the table).
Juravich, Bronfenbrenner and Hckey's chapter, which discusses the results of first contracts, is a major contribution to the literature. Not only does it provide one of the first surveys of what first union contracts are able to achieve, but the authors suggest a thought-provoking strategy (the corporate or "comprehensive" campaign, applied to the post-organizing/collective bargaining effort) which is sure to generate much discussion among union members and leaders. The chapter is a loud alarm bell for labor leaders and negotiators, showing just how far anti-union employers have gone to undermine first contract negotiations in addition to basic rights of organizing.
Eaton and Kriesky's chapter on union efforts to achieve neutrality and card check organizing agreements comes as the NLRB is actively considering restricting or even banning such agreements. The chapter analyzes management-side views regarding union efforts to achieve "N/CC" agreements, why employers agree to them, and what motivates employers to resist. The chapter provides some extremely interesting findings, which should give every union corporate campaigner pause before embarking on an "economic pressure only" campaign.
Jayne Zanglein's chapter on pension fund activism, the final of the books 14 chapters, also provides valuable insight into new ways of pressuring employers to be good community citizens. The author provides specific legal and strategic guidance to union pension trustees that are eye-opening in their inventiveness.
This book is superb. I'm not quite sure why anyone would pay $100 or more for it (as some re-sellers want) when new copies are available from the Upjohn Institute for $22.
But the book is nevertheless worth that much -- and more -- for the valuable research, insight and advice it offers.

He was Professor and Head of the Law School at the University of East London and for many years a Lecturer at the Institute of Criminology and a Fellow of Wolfson College at the University of Cambridge. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Barcelona, Hamburg, Berkeley, Simon Fraser, Queen's , St. Mary's, and Dar es Salaam. His books include Reading Ideologies (1979), Crime, Justice and Underdevelopment (1982), Censure, Politics and Criminal Justice (1990), The Sociology of Deviance (1994), Violence, Culture and Censure (1996), and Social Control and Political Order (ed. with Roberto Bergalli, 1997). Professor Keith Hylton provides a timely discussion of the most important doctrines of modern antitrust. Underlying his discussion is the thesis that antitrust can perhaps be best understood through the lens of federal common law. This book review begins by discussing how Professor Hylton's book differs from other books in the field, what topics it covers, and who might profitably read the book. The bulk of the review provides a perspective on the book.
On the positive side, Hylton has written a lucid text that fruitfully analyzes antitrust from both a legal and a traditional economic perspective. The review's critique, however, is two-fold. First, while the book does initially lay out some of the limitations of the neoclassical economic paradigm, it ends up not paying sufficient attention to new research in economics that casts doubt on the plausibility of traditional Chicago School law and economics. Second, Professor Hylton ultimately does not take advantage of several opportunities to critique the limitations of the common law in shaping antitrust and thus suggest how competition law might develop in the future.
In the end, Antitrust Law is an extremely versatile, valuable and highly recommended book. It is an excellent text for readers who wish a cogent description of antitrust as an evolving form of common law, peppered with an insightful discussion of traditional law and economics. Those wishing sustained engagement with cutting-edge economics research or the articulation of a vision for the future of antitrust, however, will be left wanting more. Some readers might wish that Professor Hylton could offer a more critical perspective on neoclassical economics as well as on the limitations of the common law in setting competition policy. Doing so would have permitted him to address head on some of the most vibrant controversies facing antitrust today. Instead, he has preferred to weave a compelling narrative of antitrust's evolution.

If you're working for a big company (or a company that wants to grow big) use this for its information value and then go get professional trademark help from a specialist attorney. If you're a little company like me, this is probably all that you need. For a dozen years I've owned the domain name [...]. I got a nasty letter from the attorney for Doubleday Book Clubs saying that I was infringing on their domain name of [...] and that they wanted me to stop. I wrote back to them and said that I wasn't infringing because I didn't run a book club, my pages didn't look at all like theirs, etc. I never heard from them again. Mr. Elias, if you happen to read this, in your next edition, I'd like to see you expand Chapter 2 on domain names. They haven't replaced trademarks, but are becomming more and more important. Summary: A VERY HANDY REFRENCE AND OVERVIEW A GOOD STARTING POINT.Rating: 4To my knowledge, the best, simple, handy reference for Trademark available. It's very useful in planning and getting an overview. I give the book a 4 because anyone who can take the complexities and vagaries of legalese and make a useful book deserves it. I can not give them a 5 because they did not (and to be fair perhaps could not) address more of the vagaries of conflicting use and claims of trademark - perhaps that is another book. Very good overall, you won't be dissatisfied especially if used in conjunction with further state and web research.
