And it's very informative. However, I wasn't particularly impressed with its organization. There are many books that could be written to help an executor do his or her job in adminstering and settling a decedent's estate, among them would be the following titles: EXECUTOR DUTIES 1. An executor's guide about an executor's role, responsibilities, and fiduciary duty 2. An executor's guide on what to do when the decedent dies 3. An executor's guide to probate procedure 12. An executor's guide to guardianship law 13. An executor's guide to disclaimers for post-death estate planning 14. An executor's guide to Louisiana custom, law, and procedure regarding an executor's duties TAXES 15. An executor's guide to federal estate taxes 16. Case studies: Completed Income Tax Forms The instant book being reviewed was close to 500 pages long. Each one of the suggested books above could easily be 500+ pages long if written well and completely. In fact, #s 10 and 11 could be done for each state and probably be 500+ pages each. The point is, that for the instant book being reviewed to get a 5-star rating it has to be well organized so it can act as a springboard for the reader into other resources. In my humble opinion, this book does not force the reader to quickly and easily grasp the material presented. Accordingly, I have bumped down its star rating. But don't take my word for it. Judge for yourself. Does the book cover the 22 topics listed herein above in a clear and organized manner? This book totes itself as an "excutor's" guide. But I think it is better defined as an adminstration and settlement guide for executors AND TRUSTEES. Thus, I would change the title a bit to make it more representative of what the book covers. I think Part I (Getting Ready) along with chapters 3 (The First Week), 4 (The First Month), and 9 (Managing Money & Paying Bills) should be moved to the end of the book and renamed Appendix A. And I think the title of the new Appendix A should be "Roles, Responsibilities, & Fiduciary Duty." I would move chapters 6 and 7 to the end of the book and call them Appendix B. Reading a Will is something an executor must do, but it is ancillary to his or her roles, responsibilities, and fiduciary duty. And I think Part IV (Getting More Help) should be made Appendix C. The current Appendix A should be renamed Appendix D. I think the middle of the book should be reordered as follows: 8. Taking inventory >>5. Life Ins, SS, & other benefits >>15. Retirement plans >>16. POD assets >>13. Survivorship property >>14. Community property 12. Property that doesn't go through probate 18. The regular probate process 17. Special procedures for small estates 11. Taxes I'm not sure where Chapter 10 belongs? It seems to be just thrown into the middle of the book. I think it should at least have been positioned somewhere close to Chapter 20 (Managing a Child's Trust). 4 stars! Summary: Get this book before you must have itRating: 5As with other Nolo books that I have read, The Executor's Guide is very well organized and well written in "plain English". The index is useful to use the book as a reference. The book is specific for what to do and the types of issues you'll face after someone close to you passes away. Not only is it a great handbook for the estate's executor, but this book will be very useful to spouses, children, heirs, and trustees. Since this book is focused on what to do to settle an estate, I'd also recommend that you get a different book on estate planning for preparing wills, trusts, etc. An excellent guide for this purpose is Nolo's Plan Your Estate: Everything You Need to Know to Protect Your Loved Ones, Property & Finances. Summary: Rating: 5This helped me alot , even if you don't have to go to probate . Well worth the price IMO . Summary: very informative bookRating: 5This is a good book to have on hand. It helped get me started on my job as executor. The only thing that the book didn't mention is if one thing has to go through probate court, it all has to go through. After my Mom's death, we thought that we wouldn't have to put everything through probate court (like the book says), but since her house and car was not jointly owned, the lawyer said her stocks, bonds, bank accounts, etc had to go through probate. She went to all the trouble to have them as a joint account with myself, or made payable on death so that it all didn't have to go through the courts but we find out that it does. That means the lawyer will get 2% of her total estate. Of course if the lawyer who had wrote up her will had told her that, he would have lost out on alot of money upon her death. So all in all, the book was a big help getting me started, alot of information. I would highly recommend this book if you are appt. as anyone's executor.

Summary: Pay attention to the sub-titleRating: 5The reviewer plugging the "MarketBuster" book has totally missed the point of this NOLO book, which is given in the subtitle: Taking Your Money Out. The reviewer is talking about strategies for growing your account. When you're in the savings/growing mode you're in a whole different situation than you're in when you're having to withdraw and/or live off your account. Going from one to the other requires a major change in strategy and, more important, a MAJOR change in mindset and, often, life style. You're confronted with a whole new set of regulations, whether the reason for the change is retirement, inheriting an account, etc. The biggest change in mindset is that instead of the pleasant pre-retirement situation of watching the money accumulate, you have to recognize that you're now going to be watching it DECLINE. And unless you've got a tremendously more than sufficient account, you're going to have to live with the knowledge that you could outlive the account, possibly due to your own mistakes, some of which this book can help you avoid. Four years ago I was confronted with making this shift a whole lot sooner than I'd planned, and with getting control of my retirement accounts under conditions where I had little help. Without the previous edition of this NOLO book, I would have been totally lost and probably made serious mistakes. Now, one caveat: This book does not tell you how to MANAGE your withdrawals and account so as to produce INCOME; as one should expect from NOLO press as a LEGAL advice publishing house, it deals with the nuts, bolts, traps and hazards of the PROCESS of getting the money out. In my situation I also found that there is not a whole lot of good material out there on the subject of managing your money and account IN the WITHDRAWAL stage, and this subject is affecting more and more people, as the country shifts from defined benefit (pensions) plans to plans like 401Ks and IRAs that place the job of investing and managing on the individual. It is a whole lot more complex, risky, and stressful than most people realize, especially considering the general abysmal education (lack of) even young people receive on the subject, let alone people my age who were raised to count on pensions, etc. (And thank goodness for Social Security, which while far from adequate, can still supply a firm base of about 30 to 50% of a retirement income; although that's another issue) So I recommend this book as essential for the basic procedures, but you will also need additional information on how to manage your income account(s). Personally, in addition to a good fee based financial planner, I found invaluable help from folks who have actually been doing the job for years, especially in the forums of Morningstar, for example. But you have to be on constant alert for scamsters and the whole "how to be a billionaire" publishing crowd. You're going to have to invest some serious time and effort in educating yourself for a the whole new job of retirement, and this book is an excellent place to start, preferably BEFORE you actually have to start TAKING YOUR MONEY OUT.

Although it provides fairly good overview of tax deudctions, it should not be used as a comprehensive reference for tax professionals. The book is a relatively light read in a highly readable format. Each tax deduction has a good overview and a case example to boot. It isn't, however, an answer to complex tax questions which the book willingly acknowledges should be taken to a tax professional. For most business owners, this book should be sufficient for most of the tax deduction questions they may have. This book certainly answered all of mine. The book provides valuable information on the probability of an IRS audit (don't form sole proprietorship if you want to avoid an audit) and how one can minimize one's chances of an audit. Summary: So simple to understand, excellent examplesRating: 4I read this book after forming a C-Corp in California (using the Nolo guide). Although I am familiar with many biz deductions, this book walks you through many examples of deductions you can take if you plan ahead. I really like the "Day in the Life of..." examples of how you can maximize legal deductions pertaining to mileage. There's an excellent section on home office deductions. My husband, a self-admitted dummy when it comes to expense reports, taxes, etc., picked up the book after I was done, and even he understands the concepts. Already he has found deductions for his sole proprietorship and non-reimbursed employee biz expenses. Great value and so easy to understand. Highly recommend. Summary: Great book!Rating: 5Great book. I go to the IRS instructions and their web site and it's as clear as used motor oil. It's enough to drive you insane. Picked up this book and it's spelled out in plain English. No need to read a passage five times to understand. As others have stated, you need this BEFORE you start your business and you need it a year before you do your taxes. In other words, it will help you along with your 2006 return and you can learn from it on how to do a better job for 2007 by keeping the right documents and receipts in order to get even bigger legitimate deductions. I know I wish I'd had this book last year! With that said, this is not a line-by-line assistant for Schedule C and the 8829 which I wish it was at times. There are just times when the IRS uses a specific term on a specific line and it would help to have a layman's definition at hand. I didn't get that with this book. Nonetheless, it's been one of the best sources of information I've found for doing one's self employment tax forms. Summary: GoodRating: 4If you're in business for yourself, you better buy this book.
