As we all know children have many advantages in learning English than adults. Therefore it is important for the primary students to make use of their time to learning English. Schooling is one of many ways to acquire English skills, it can provide the students with chances for regular and systematic learning. While to learn English well that’s not enough. Language learning need to practice and use it in real society, classroom learning can provide limited chance and time for them to use the target language. They need multiple ways to acquire the target language. Attending English training programs is one of the effective ways. It can provide them with opportunities to communicate with the peers in target language, make chance to use English in real society, motivate their English learning interests, and enhance their self-esteem and self-confidence and so on. Also it can provide the disabled students opportunities to keep chest with the classroom learning process. In other words, attending English training classes can really benefit the primary students if they are willing to do so and have great interests in it.
However, in practice, a lot of students are forced to attend the training because of the pressure from society, family, or educational system. The coming of the information era and the globalization of the world make English more important now than the previous times. The parents all have strong desires to foster their children to be phoenixes or dragons. So they spend much time, energy and money on their children’s education. They send their children to attend many kinds of trainings, which include English training. Although we cannot say their purposes are not good, at least we can say they impose their desires on their children and ignore the children’s wishes or interests or their competence. Some children are very interested in learning English and they want to improve their English skills. The training class may be their best choice and they can benefit from it. While the students who are unwilling to attend such training can benefit nothing from it, instead it may destroy their learning interests and self-confidence. Nowadays the PETS certificate card has become the necessary condition for choosing a famous middle school or high school in Beijing, Shanghai and other big cities. The PETS is originally designed for adult learners who can not receive formal education, but now it is becoming the children’s “favor”. Of course, no one child is willing to attend such test according to Beijing News Daily. They are forced to attend such test because the schools regard the PETS marks as the criterion to enroll their students. What should you do if all of your pees are attending such test? You have no choice but to do it.
When the purpose of the training has become the pass of the exam or just as a stepping-stone rather than to learn English well, it should be considered cautiously. The attending of the English training class should not become the variation of the children’s load. Parents should respect their child’s opinions and consider his or her interests, energy, and health. The government and educational institutions should also consider that whether or not it's necessary for the children to attend the PETS training and test.
In one word, if you want to improve your child’s English skills, you can choose to let him or her to attend the training program. But remember: don’t let it become your child’s load because it can destroy him or her. After all, the students should take responsibility for their own learning. |
