Ladies and gentlemen, colleagues, good evening.Thank you all
for honoring us with your presence tonight.
The American embassy has just completed its \"three stresses\"
education campaign, and I am pleased to report that, on the
whole, our level of spiritual civilization has risen.Still,
while our spiritual civilization level is relatively high, we
continue to have difficulty in finding culturally sensitive
slogans for our receptions.?
Often we try to introduce a favorite poem or an
appropriate proverb. But tonight's homework has been easy, and
it did not take us long to settle on:\"If the old guy doesn'
t leave,the new guy can't come in.\"?
So we have come tonight to the inevitable evolution of
diplomatic life - peaceful evolution, to be sure - the old
guy (that's me) is leaving, and the new guy, Gene Martin, is
already here.
But before I introduce Gene to you, I want to thank all
of you here who have made my past three and a half years
in Beijing so valuable to me.?
Our stalwart friend Confucius used to say that everyone
was his teacher, and I am honored that so many of my
teachers have come tonight. You, and many more people who
could not join us tonight, have been my teachers. You have
given me a priceless opportunity to learn about China - her
history, language and literature and above all her people -
and I am deeply grateful.
In China the relationship between teacher and student has
always been considered precious and often imbued with special
emotion.So too,are relationship among colleagues.And you have
all been my colleagues here as well. For your friendship
and help, I want to express my thanks. To all my
colleagues in the Chinese government, in the media and
business world and academia; to my colleagues in other
diplomatic missions; and above all to my Chinese and American
colleagues in the American mission: Many, many thanks.
For the United States, as for China, no foreign
relationship is more important than that which we have with
each other; and none is more complex or difficult. All of
us, be we Chinese or American, who work to nurture that
relationship do so because we believe our two nations simply
must understand each other better and must cooperate with each
other more fully if our children and grandchildren are to
inherit a peaceful and prosperous world.
I hope that over the last three and some years I have
contributed to improving that relationship and to increasing
our understanding of each other. I intend to continue to
try to do that after leaving government.?
And I shall be sure to try to apply another maxim of
Confucius to my work:\"Check yourself thrice daily to see if
you're doing a good job.\"If you are not, it's time to write
a self-criticism. And I shall certainly welcome all your
comments on my performance.
That's enough for this old guy. Tonight's the night for
the new.It is a special honor and privilege to introduce to
you Gene Martin,a friend from my earliest days in the Foreign
Service, when we met in Hong Kong in 1976.
Given Gene's Chinese name,we did not have to search for
suitable proverbs. We decided against \"This stud can really fly\"
and settled on the more dignified, and accurate,\"The old horse
knows the road.\"Gene has had a long and distinguished
diplomatic career,in Washington and in many places in Asia,
including Guangzhou and Hong Kong.As testimony to his great
skill, he has been called back from very recent retirement to
become deputy chief of mission here under our new ambassador.
The ancient sage Guan Zi had it right:\"We cannot not use the
wisdom of the old horse.\"?
As our final Chinese proverb says,\"Over a long distance
you learn what your horse can do, and over a long time you
come to know a man's heart. \"I like Gene Martin very much
and I am certain you all will too. |
