Last week, Mr Richard W. Riley, the US Secretary of
Education, visited China and signed an official agreement for
cooperation in educational exchange. At present there are some
51,000 Chinese students and scholars at US academic
institutions, while 3,000 American students and researchers
are in China. In addition, thousands of American instructors
work at Chinese institutions.
At a short press conference on Wednesday, a reporter
asked Secretary Riley what he thought was the main difference
between Chinese and American education. The secretary used the
example of math instruction to compare the two systems: the
method used to teach the students is fairly similar, but the
Chinese textbooks are much slimmer. Chinese, he concluded, seem
to teach math in greater depth, while Americans cover a
broader range of topics, but more shallowly. He added that
he thought that, at least in the case of math, the Chinese
approach was preferable.? |
