TEGUCIGALPA,Honduras(Reuters)-Impoverished Central America has
become a huge“junkyard”for second-hand cars from the US,
according to Marco Gonzalez, chief of environmental affairs for
a body seeking the economic integration of the region. He
said the presence of so many polluting gas-guzzlers had led
to high levels of carbon monoxide and other contaminants in
the nations of Central America.
Because used cars are far cheaper than new ones, large
numbers of old vehicles from the United States are imported
by Central Americans and used not just by private owners but
also for public transport. The region, where millions of people
get by on as little as $2 a day, also imports large
quantities of used clothes, shoes and electrical appliances
from the US.
Mr Gonzalez said the pollution from vehicles dating from
the 1970s and 1980s, combined with deforestation, forest fires
and chaotic waste disposal, were endangering the regional
ecology.“If the governments of the region don't adopt
opportune measures,in fifteen years we Central Americans will
be suffering serious levels of contamination of our air and
water,”he said. |
