翻译札记：删节

对照Smiley's People的译文时，发现国内出版的译本《伦敦谍影》（81年出版）有意漏译了一段，原文是：

At least I haven’t got to talk about Communists to mad Harry, Smiley thought while he waited. At least I haven’t got to hear how all the Chinese waiters in Penzance are standing by for the order from Peking to poison their customers. Or how the bloody strikers should be put up against a wall and shot—where’s their sense of service, for Christ’s sake? Or how Hitler may have been a blackguard but he had the right idea about the Jews. Or some similar monstrous, but seriously held, conviction.


可以看出，作者明显是不赞同这种说法的。比如他说有这种想法的是个mad Harry，这种想法是monstrous。他并没有说Communist或者Chinese的坏话。但是，译者却故意不译这一段。
有意思的是，前面有一句，倒是有点“污蔑”之嫌，译者却没删：
So now all Hector got to do is fly to Hamburg at his own expense, take a train north and play rabbit for some crazy entrapment game that Otto Leipzig has lined up for himself with the East Germans, the Russians, the Poles, the Bulgarians, the Cubans, and also no doubt, being modern, the Chinese.

后面还有一句，也多少有点“不敬”，译者也忠实地译出来了：
“The subject of our high-level discussions was extremely secret,” Grigoriev replied with resignation. “My Ministry wished to consider ways of giving teeth to the official Soviet attitude towards nations who were selling arms to China. We were to discuss what sanctions could be used against the offenders.”


当年类似的避讳不少，估计现在也还有。有些译者还在前言或者后记里说明一下：个别地方有删节。但有些根本没有说明。不过，这些删节，一般是可以理解的。而上面的那段话不译，真的搞不懂译者的脑回路，不知道不敢译上面说的那一段，是否是觉得这几句太生猛，即使没有恶意，也不是好话，说不定还会诱发反动思想？

以前我翻译时请示过上级，不过我的译文本来就是给内部参考的。

原作者显然不了解中国，能把单这个姓写成Dan，我也只是纠正了明显的引文错误，有些错得太离谱不方便改所以将错就错了。

中国出版界一直有审查制度，只不过审查者通常是责任编辑。作者或译者，只要不是素人，或者哪怕是素人，对这个审查都是了然的，他们既不想给编辑惹事，也不想给自己惹事。

但问题是，制度和原则可能大家都明白，但细节大家并不明白。因为审查的依据与其说是规则，不如说是潜规则。
潜规则的结果是层层加码无限放大。编辑其实也并不很清楚上面的要求到底是什么，所以只好凭感觉自定义。作者译者也都一样。为了不惹事，加码和放大就是必须的操作。

所以，研究一下编辑、作者译者各自的审查潜规则列表是一件很有意义的工作。
以本案来看，不管这个删节是译者还是编辑的操作，其背后的逻辑大致是：可以说China，不可以说communism。
