Edwin A.Abbott在1884年所著的经典故事《平地：多维的罗曼史》描述了“四边形”（A.Square）的冒险经历。四边形是一个生活在二维世界里的角色，在那里居住着能够活动的各种几何图形三角形、四边形、五边形等等。在故事接近尾声的时候，即2000年的第一天，一个来自三维“空间地带”的球形生物途径平地(Flatland)，将四边形带离他的二维世界，向他展示出更大世界里的三维面貌。当四边形逐渐了解球形世界所展示的一切时，他断定“空间地带”本身可能作为一个很小的子空间而存在于一个更大的四维宇宙中。
