A volcano erupts in Iceland and brings the whole of Europe to a standstill, stranding thousands of travelers around the world unable to fly home. But the fact that Eyjafijallajokull is only a relatively small volcano reminds us all of the raw power of nature, and as we’ve seen in the past few days air travel over the continent is at the whim of changing winds. However, there is a larger threat: every time Eyjafijallajokull has erupted in the last 2000 years its neighbour Katla – ten times the size – has also flared into life within months. If this happens this could cause aircraft unable to fly to and around Europe for anything up to 18 months according to estimates. Using cameras that have been on Eyjafijallajokull and Katla since before the former blew, we examine the latter for signs of activity that could lead to disaster for the aviation industry.
