SHANGHAI — Zhuo Lin, the widow of Deng Xiaoping, the Communist revolutionary who served as China’s paramount leader in the latter part of the 20th century, died Wednesday in Beijing. She was 93.

Her death was announced by the state-run Xinhua News Agency, which did not disclose the cause.
Ms. Zhuo was never active in politics, but she played a crucial role in helping Deng survive a series of political purges during his long career, including the darkest days of the Cultural Revolution, when the couple’s son was seriously injured in a fall in Beijing and the family was exiled to Jiangxi Province, in southern China. For a time, the country’s future leader and his wife worked in a tractor repair shop.
But after Mao Zedong died in 1976, Deng rose to power again, and he later became the most powerful figure in the Communist Party and the architect of many of the country’s bold economic reforms. He died in 1997, at 92.

One of the few titles Ms. Zhuo held was consultant to the Central Military Commission, which she was given in 1978. When she died Wednesday, the Central Committee of the Communist Party saluted her as a “time honored loyal Communist fighter.”

She was born Pu Zhuolin in April 1916, the daughter of a prosperous ham-and-sausage merchant in Yunnan Province in southwestern China. After attending the prestigious Peking University, she moved to the Communist Party stronghold at Yan’an in northern China in 1937. The Communists had set up a base there to fight both the Japanese and the Nationalist government, which was led by Chiang Kai-shek.

Their eldest son, Deng Pufang, was paralyzed in a fall from a three-story building while being persecuted because of his father’s downfall during the Cultural Revolution. He later became a prominent spokesman in China for people with physical disabilities, and he still has an active role in supporting the disadvantaged.

Widow of Chinese Leader, Economic Reformer Deng Xiaoping

Zhuo Lin, 93, the widow of late Chinese paramount leader and economic reformer Deng Xiaoping, died July 29 in Beijing from an unspecified illness. Her death was reported by the official Xinhua News Agency, citing the Communist Party's central committee.

Mrs. Zhuo was the third wife of Deng, who led China's Communist Party and guided the country's capitalist economic reforms in the 1980s. They married in 1939 and had five children, who apparently survive her. Deng's first wife died in childbirth in 1930, and his second wife divorced him when he was in political trouble in 1933.

Deng was purged three times in his nearly 50 years in the party's upper ranks. He never held the posts of head of state or head of government but nevertheless succeeded Mao Zedong as China's paramount leader from 1978 until the early 1990s. He died in 1997.

The central committee said Mrs. Zhuo, who was born in southwestern Yunnan province in 1916 and joined the party in 1938, was a "time-honored loyal communist fighter," Xinhua said.

Mrs. Zhuo was not politically active, and most of her public appearances were limited to ceremonial occasions. In 1997, months after Deng died, Mrs. Zhuo and daughter Deng Nan attended festivities in Hong Kong marking the return of the British colony to Chinese rule, as a tribute to Deng's role in winning back the territory.

Although Deng put an end to the "iron rice bowl" -- lifetime jobs for all -- he ruled with an iron fist. The military suppression of the Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protests in 1989 -- believed to have taken place on his final orders -- killed hundreds, perhaps thousands, and put a blot on the economic progress Deng had achieved.
