Lucy Fossil Tours the U.S. With Artifacts From Ethiopian Society
She was named for the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," which was playing at the camp in Ethiopia when the set of bones was discovered in 1974. The skeleton is 40 percent complete and helped reshape scientific views of evolution by serving as evidence that our ancestors walked upright earlier than previously thought.
The Lucy fossil is now on a six-year tour of museums in the United States, along with rare Ethiopian artifacts. "Lucy's Legacy: The Hidden Treasures of Ethiopia" opens at the Houston Museum of Natural Science and will continue to other U.S. cities.
