"When a robot dies you don't have to write a letter to its
mother,” quoted a United States Navy chief right after
watching an iRobot Packbot destroyed in the field [17].
Recently, iRobots models have been used in Iraq and
Afghanistan and the response has been positive [17]. They
have been proven to save lives. Such robots as Explosive
Ordinance Disposal robots have been used to de-mine areas,
disable bombs, and perform other dangerous tasks. By using
a robot in such a way, a human life may be saved. Instead of
placing a soldier in the position of de-mining or disabling a
bomb, a robot can perform the job without the fear of lost
life. By providing the United States soldiers with advanced
technology such as robots, the government will decrease the
number of deaths that occur during present and future wars.
By allowing the soldiers to perform their tasks with a
reduced fear of chemical attacks and bombs, the United
States government will improve the soldiers quality of life.
Going to war to protect the greatest country in the world is a
daunting task, and it is the duty of the United States
government to give them any tool that will make their lives
easier as they fight for our freedom and way of life.
THESE ARE THE WEAPONS OF THE FUTURE
War has changed over the years. Gone are the days when
millions of lives would be lost in a single battle. On the
contrary, the war in Iraq has taken just over three thousand
lives so far. This is thanks, in part, to incredible new
technology that has been incorporated into battlefields by the
United States and our allies. Despite the fact that our

technology continues to improve, our enemies have also
been working tirelessly to create new and more powerful
weapons that are capable of killing many people. Car bombs,
chemical weapons, and many other weapons that are
difficult to defend against are becoming commonplace in the
new wars being fought today. Because of this it is more
important than ever that Robotics is integrated effectively
into military combat.
By implementing robots that can defuse bombs, spy
intelligently on our enemies, and eventually fight, soldiers
will be in a better, safer position than ever before. With the
new technology that is being created and improved upon
daily, the loss of United States lives will decrease even
further. Regardless of political or ideological beliefs, that is
a goal that should be shared by everyone. |
