Product Description:

The nature of sweating and the origins of low pay legislation are of fundamental social, economic and moral importance. Although difficult to define, sweating, according to a select committee established to investigate the issue, was characterised by long hours, poor working conditions and above all by low pay. By the beginning of the twentieth century the government estimated that up to a third of the British workforce could be classed as sweated labour, and for the first time in a century began to think about introducing legislation to address the problem.Whilst historians have written much on unemployment, poverty relief and other such related social and industrial issues, relatively little work has been done on the causes, extent and character of sweated labour. That work which has been done has tended to focus on the tailoring trades in London and Leeds, and fails to give a broad overview of the phenomenon and how it developed and changed over time.In contrast, this volume adopts a broad national and long-run approach, providing a more holistic understanding of the subject. Rejecting the argument that sweating was merely a London or gender related problem, it paints a picture of a widespread and constantly shifting pattern of sweated labour across the country, that was to eventually persuade the government to introduce legislation in the form of the 1909 Trades Board Act. It was this act, intended to combat sweated labour, which was to form the cornerstone of low pay legislation, and the barrier to the introduction of a minimum wage, for the next 90 years.

nsult to Injury: Libel, Slander, and Invasions of Privacy
By William K. Jones

  * Publisher:  University Press of Colorado
  * Number Of Pages:  376
  * Publication Date:  2003-11
  * ISBN-10 / ASIN:  0870817426
  * ISBN-13 / EAN:  9780870817427

Product Description:

In Insult to Injury, William K. Jones reviews the seminal U.S. Supreme Court decisions that restrict the First Amendment in order to protect persons against defamatory falsehoods, invasions of privacy, and related psychic harm. Covering cases
ranging from a restaurant owner driven out of business over a veal chop to a University of Georgia football coach accused of sharing plays with an opponent before a game, Jones examines the many subtleties of the law, its interpretation, and its restrictions.

Although the author concludes that the accommodations
struck by the courts are appropriate, he nevertheless argues that there are serious deficiencies in the complex legal edifice that has been erected. After reviewing the relevant cases, Jones recommends a comprehensive new framework for dealing with the problem of defamatory falsehoods—a framework designed to afford greater protection for expressions on public issues while also providing more meaningful relief to the victims of harmful speech.

With material covering the impact of the internet and related electronic means of expression, Insult to Injury is sure to be of interest to current practitioners in the media bar, law students, and journalism students alike.

Globalisation and Governance in the Pacific Islands State, Society and Governance in Melanesia
Studies
in State and Society in the Pacific, No. 1

Editor: Stewart Firth

ISBN 1 920942 97 1
ISBN 1 920942 98 X

Published: December 2006

The Pacific Islands are feeling the effects of globalisation. Free trade in
sugar and garments is threatening two of Fiji’s key industries. At the same time other opportunities are emerging. Labour migration is growing in importance, and Pacific governments are calling for more access to Australia’s labour market. Fiji has joined Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu and Kiribati as a remittance economy, with thousands of its citizens working overseas. Meantime, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands grapple with an older kind of globalisation in which overseas companies exploit mineral and forest resources.

The Pacific Islands confront unique problems of governance in this era of globalisation. The modern, democratic state often fits awkwardly with traditional ways of doing politics in that part of the world. Just as often, politicians in the Pacific exploit tradition or invent it to serve modern political purposes.

The contributors to this volume examine Pacific globalisation and governance from a wide range of perspectives. They come from Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Hawai’i, the Federated States of Micronesia, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand and Jamaica as well as Australia.
