Glucosamine Supplementation Not Likely to Raise HDL Levels

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Nov 30 - Commonly consumed doses of glucosamine do not increase serum HDL cholesterol or its main component, apolipoprotein (apo) A1, in people with diabetes and low HDL cholesterol, researchers found in a small placebo-controlled crossover study.

\"Many people take glucosamine for arthritis-like symptoms and, from previous research, we thought glucosamine may also have a beneficial effect on HDL cholesterol,\" Dr. Stewart G. Albert from Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Missouri, noted in comments to Reuters Health.

He and colleagues evaluated the effects of glucosamine (500 mg, three times daily) versus matching placebo on serum HDL and apo A1 in two type 1 and 10 type 2 diabetics with low HDL cholesterol (1.03 mmol/L). The three men and nine women in the study were randomly assigned in a double-blind fashion to glucosamine or placebo for 2 weeks, followed by a 4-week washout period and a 2-week crossover to the alternate therapy.

According to Dr. Albert, \"we did not find any benefit of glucosamine on HDL cholesterol or any worsening of the diabetes control.\"

In a report of the study in the journal Diabetes Care for November, Dr. Albert and colleagues note that the lack of a significant effect on glycemic control \"is consistent with previously published studies on the effect of glucosamine in both diabetic and nondiabetic individuals.\"

However, the lack of an effect of glucosamine on HDL cholesterol and apo A1 was \"contrary to our expectations based on our previous studies showing a significant effect of glucosamine on apo A1 production in hepatocytes.\"

\"This study does not answer whether higher doses or longer duration of glucosamine may make any difference,\" Dr. Albert said.
