CCTV anchorman Bi Fujian found himself in trouble in late November after it was revealed that he hosted a wedding.
It was a Shenyang billionaire's wedding, which used 38 stretch Hummer SUV's, ran red lights and blocked roads in the northeastern city. The host family also invited a handful of pop stars to perform live during the ceremony.
Local media reported the excesses of the wedding, stirring a national outcry against the wasteful, disrespectful, even illegal behavior of the super rich. Naturally, Bi became a target of criticism as well. Though Bi himself denied it, rumor has it that he earned a fee of up to 200,000 yuan for hosting the wedding ceremony.
Many people point to CCTV's internal regulations banning its celebrity employees from making money on the side. Others question whether Bi paid due taxes on this large sum of income. But the discussion has mostly focused on the private behavior of public figures. Many commentators assert that celebrities and public figures should refrain from taking part in private activities that might offend ordinary people.
What is your opinion? Do you think public figures need to practice restraint? |
