A \"Free Hugs\" campaign, which hit the streets of Beijing, Changsha and Xi'an, has received both criticism and support.
The campaigners intend to cheer up strangers by hugging them on the street. They opened their arms to embrace passers-by and brandished cards saying \"free hugs\", \"care from strangers\", and \"refuse to be apathetic\", the Beijing News said.
According to one of the organizers of the Chinese version of the campaign, free hugs will bring people closer and make the world more like a big family.
But many Chinese appear not to have warmed to the campaign. Most people just walked away, ignoring the requests for hugs. Some local police even questioned it. They said the campaign didn't have a permit from the proper authority, adding that it might pose a negative social impact.
