Some patients given Merck & Co.'s experimental AIDS vaccine may not have responded to the drug because of their immunity to a common strain of cold virus, investigators found. Merck's vaccine contained genetically altered adenovirus type 5, a virus that causes colds and elements of HIV. The cold virus was intended to trigger an immune response that would prevent the vaccine recipient from acquiring HIV. But patients who had pre-existing immunity to the cold virus may have became more vulnerable to HIV after vaccination, researchers believe.
