谈谈marketing的汉译

marketing是经贸英语中最常用的词语之一。在外贸人员的名片上我们也经常看到marketing department和 marketing plan等词语。，它们通常被译成销售部和销售计划。在外贸函电和外贸英语教科书中，marketing常被译为“销售”。笔者认为这种译法不够确切。这除了有语言方面的原因外，还涉及到中外经营管理体制的不同。 我们不妨先从market作动词的含义谈起。当market作及物动词时，意思是to carry on all activities by which transfer of title or possession of a product from seller to buyer is effected； 或者是to introduce a product on the market（n.市场）。这种含义的market及其派生的marketing的意思与sell和sale相近，可汉译为“销售”，如： The exporter wishes to market his goods in a foreign country through instrumentality of an independent agent. 那个出口商想要靠一独立代理人在国外销售其货物。 The joint venture insisted on their cooperative marketing the new computers. 这家合资企业坚持它们合作销售新计算机。 当market作不及物动词时，它与trade含义相同，表示在市场上进行买卖活动，它派生的marketing只能汉译为“（市场上的）交易，买卖”，而不是单一的“销售”。例如：do our evening marketing（到夜市上去买（卖）东西）；an international marketing company（一家国际贸易公司）。 Marketing 作为经贸术语，《Americana 百科全书》的解释是：“Marketing is defined as ' the performance of business activities directed towards, and incident to, the flow of goods and services from producer to customer or user'. Marketing, therefore, is made up on one hand of physical activities such as transporting, storing, and selling goods, and on the other hand of a series of decisions which must be reached by any organization undertaking any part of the process of moving goods from the producer to the user.” 由此可知marketing一词的含义很广，它主要是指提供产品和服务来满足消费者的需要。具体包括：市场调查、开发产品、制定销售政策、规定合理价格、改进销售方法、开拓销售渠道、调节产品贮运、培训业务人员、改进售后服务、公共关系和广告业务等等。所以不能狭隘地把marketing理解成selling或sale，实际上后者仅仅是marketing的一部分。例如： Marketing of a product does not only mean selling, but going to the market, visiting our customers... 推销产品不只意味着出售，而且还要亲临市场，拜访客户…… 汉译时需要根据具体的语言环境译成“推销”、“行销（学）”、“市场学”和“销售学”等等。 至于本文开头提到的marketing department到底怎样翻译，笔者认为先要了解中外经贸机构的设置情况。60年代末，西方工业由于广泛采用电子技术而出现了一个质变性飞跃，经济发展空前迅速，市场竞争日趋激烈。为了提高竞争力。为了提高竞争能力，这些国家的企业、公司越来越感到发展与推销产品有关的各个业务环节的综合作用的重要性。许多公司扩大了原来的sales department的业务范围，并把它改为marketing department。这是西方企业销售经营管理体制改革中的一项重要内容。英国广播公司（BBC）出版的《商业英语》( The language of business )一书在解释marketing department时指出： In many firms now the sales department, advertising department, public relations and so on are combined into one department, called marketing。其业务范围相当于我国现行外贸机制中各外贸进出口公司的出口处、商情处、外事组等部门。 因此笔者认为在翻译来自国外的函电或资料时，把marketing department译为“市场开拓部”、“推销部”更为确切些。而我国外贸公司设立的单纯销售部门的英译一般用sales department。 在我国的产、供、销合一的企业管理体制下，“销”是对应“产”而言，和marketing所指的“推销”或“销售”概念也有一定的区别，有关这种部门也可译成sales department。 当然，如果外贸公司或企业设立的是类似于上述的集多种职能于一体的机构，则也可译成marketing department。 Virtual Reality 翻译种种 袁品荣 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 近一个时期来，Virtual Reality (VR) 一词（语）在报刊等新闻传媒上频频出现，十分活跃，从而也引出了对 VR 该怎么翻译好的问题。据《光明日报》载，VR 的译名计有：“虚拟实在”（1996 年 ,10 月 28 日）“临境”、“虚实”、“电象”、“虚拟境象”以及“灵境”（1997 年 1 月 16 日）；此外，还有最常见的“虚拟现实”（如《文汇报》1997 年 3 月 12 日“小辞典”）。 　　对 VR 究竟怎么理解和怎么翻译，笔者不敢妄下结论。不过，从最近一期外刊上读到的一篇文章（载于 Jane's DEFENCE' 97，作者为 Ian Strachan，Editor，Jane's Simulation and Training Systems）在这两方面都可给人以不小的启发。为帮助说明问题，现将此文中有关的部分摘录于下。文章标题和引语是： VIRTUALLY REAL Virtual reality is rapidly becoming the training tool of the 21st Century - but what exactly is it? 　　将此翻译过来大致是： 可说是真的Virtual reality 正在迅速成为二十一世纪的训练器具--但它确切的含义是什么呢？ 　　文中在讲到 virtual 一词的定义时是这样说的：One dictionary definition of \"virtual\" is \"something which is unreal but can be considered as being real for some purposes.\" 　　文章接着对 VR 作了几种实质性的释义： Cyber-something? To some, VR is putting on a Cyber-helmet (whatever that is) and involves total immersion (whatever that means) in cyberspace (wherever that is). Collimation? To some, VR is a view through a collimated display system. Tactile sensors? To some, VR implies tactile simulation as well a visual system. 　　对以上这些解释或释义，Strachan 认为它们都是对的：Which of these interpretations of VR is right? I believe that they all are.（对 VR 的这些诠释中哪个是对的？我相信它们都是对的。）为什么都对？Strachan 说那是因为 Englishis a living language and insistence on any precise interpretation of VR is narrow and not in accordance with what has already become common usage.（英语是一门活的语言，而坚持对 VR 作任何精确的诠释是狭隘观念，也不符合约定俗成。） 　　通过以上的介绍，我们似乎能够得出这样的结论：各位专家学者所给的译名都是对的。因为，汉语也是一门活的语言，坚持对 Virtual Reality 作任何精确的翻译是狭隘观念 。但是，另一方面，则仍有必要从以上译名中挑选出一两个最好的来，或者也可以另起炉灶，如果还有更好的话。那末，我们认为“虚拟现实”和“虚拟实在”与原文更加“形似”。其他几个译名虽各有千秋，但总嫌“神似”有余，而“形似”不足。词和词语的翻译同句子和篇章一样应力求“神形兼具”。在这种情况下，找到一个最理想的译名实属必要。 　　借鉴以上众多译名，并综合 Strachan 所作的分析和解释，经过反复比较和推敲，我们以为 Virtual Reality 视情可译为“拟真技术”、“拟真”或“虚拟真实”。这几个译名与所介绍的那些在含义上大致相同而表述略有不同，或许是最为得体的。理由如次：第一，这么译十分符合英文词语的本义。Virtual 在这里意为 in effect, though not in fact; not such in fact but capable of being considered as such for somepurposes（实质上的，虚拟的）（见 Chambers Concise 20th Century Dictionary），这与 Strachan 所定义的完全一致；reality 在此意为 the state or fact of being real; that which is real and not imaginary（真，真实）（出处同上），这比取“现实”或“实在”这两个释义似来得确切。第二，它们体现了汉语也是一门活的语言的精神，即不坚持单一的，而是视情而译。第三，更可一提的是：virtual reality 是与simulation 和 emulation 相互密切关联的技术，而“拟真（技术）”恰与“模拟（技术）”(simulation) 和“仿真（技术）”(emulation) 构成互为对照的术语。如此，当取“拟真技术”、“拟真”或“虚拟真实”。 　　袁品荣，《Virtual Reality 翻译种种》，《上海科技翻译》 1998 年第 3 期
