Suggestions to Research Support in Science and Technology

    Since the reform and opening-up policy took effect in 1978, China has achieved great economic growth. After gaining the access to WTO in 2001, China is facing fierce global competition with more and more foreign investors coming to China seeking chances for profit. However, the status of production efficiency of Chinese enterprises is very low with respect to that of other developed countries. Much additional energy and labors are needed to manufacture the same products; moreover most Chinese enterprises lack the technical ability to produce the high-tech product with high-added value. So it's of great significance for China to take concrete measures to support research in science and technology in order to gain the sustainable economy development. In this essay, some feasible suggestions are presented for this purpose.

    Firstly, the media, including radio, television, newspapers and so forth, should take the responsibility to propagandize the importance of science and technology. Now many enterprises in China, especially those owned by nation, lack the technology to enhance the production efficiency. Because they are satisfied with the present modes and don’t want to put any more money into research due to the ignorance of technology. If the leaders are aware of the importance of science and technology, much money and effort will be put into research, so the production efficiency will be enhanced and result in more profit. It is a benign cycle.

    Secondly, more money should be invested to education system and research centers. Intelligence is the power of the economic growth. More schools and universities should be built and enlarged to enroll more students eager for the knowledge, especially in the poor regions where teaching environment is extremely bad. Special honor and money should be given to those who want to teach in those regions. And the teaching methods should be changed to stimulate the imagination and creativity of the students, instead of the examinations purpose. As for the research centers, researchers must know the urgent problems that the country really needs to solve, and use the money in the real place in case of wastage and corruption.

    Thirdly, the energy sources are very important for a country's development. As the oil price is growing higher and higher these days, research should by direct to other alternative energy material aside from reducing the current energy usage by enhancing efficiency. Wind, solar, biomass and so forth, are all renewable energy that enable clean environment. Their amount is large and endless, so if the science and technology gained by intense research can guarantee the use of such renewable energy, it's a leading advantage of global competition. Actually, China has founded one of foundation of “863” plan for the hydrogen clean energy, especially for use in the automotive propulsion. As for the energy reduction, research on science and technology should be placed on manufacturing process, such as changing the reaction process, under milder condition ( lower pressure and temperature ), choosing low-price materials and so on, all these can reduce the energy and enhance profit.
