“Look”既是名词,也是动词(及物和不及物),用途广泛,词义多变。
1.“Look”:作及物动词,可说“Shedoes not look her age.”她看来与她的年龄不相称(显得年轻)。但“Jean looks his life;he is only forty, but appears to be sixty.”(杰恩的摸样显示了他坎坷的经历,只有40岁,看上去像60岁的人。)
2.“Look out”:当乘客在车窗边向外张望时,正巧一列车向相驶来时,好心人大叫“Look out”(当心!)是提醒不要把头伸出车窗去,但他却理解为“朝外看,向外探头”,将头探出车外,酿成悲剧。
3.“Look up”:有多种用法和意思。
抬头看。“I looked up and saw her.”(我抬起头来,看见了她。)
好转,改善。“The nationai eceonomy is beginning to look up.”(国民经济开始好转。)
看望,拜访(尤指多时不见后)。“I want to look up an old friend.”(我想去拜访一个老朋友。)
查验,查阅。“Look up new words in the dictionary.”(翻字典,查新词。)
