Titlie:New trends in immunosuppression for pediatric renal transplant recipients.
Author:Paul Atkison and Guido Filler.
Source:Current Opinion in Organ Transplantation. 12(5):509-514, October 2007
Purpose of the review:Rapidly growing information, published in a large variety of
journals, poses a challenge to pediatric transplant physicians. This review aims at summarizing the most important manuscripts published over the last 1–2 years.
Recent findings:While rejection rates remain low with current immunosuppressive regimes, the focus shifts towards improvement of long-term outcome and reduction of serious adverse events. While effective and safe calcineurin-inhibitor minimization protocols are emerging, it may be too early for calcineurin-inhibitor avoidance. Significant
randomized controlled clinical trials question the efficiency of basiliximab induction therapy. Nonadherence remains a major challenge particularly in adolescent renal
transplant recipients.
Summary
The search for fewer nephrotoxic immunosuppressive regimes after pediatric renal
transplantation continues. |
