Accessible to the layperson, this four-volume reference contains approximately 800 entries on treating illnesses using alternative medicine, the theory and practice of various alternative cures, and the herbs and remedies employed. Terms are cross-referenced throughout. Among the therapies discussed: ayurvedic medicine, behavioral optometry, Chinese massage, hatha yoga, traditional Chinese herbalism, western herbalism, Livingston-Wheeler therapy, and traditional African medicine. A sample of the range of topics includes aging, AIDS, black cumin seed extract, fasting, food poisoning, heart disease, nutrition, potassium pregnancy, prickly heat, and systemic lupus erythematoses. In addition to b&w images, a section of color photos depicting 64 herbs, remedies, and supplements is included in each volume. Volume 4 contains a list of organizations, a glossary, and a general index.
