run for the roses

Hi all
I heard a good run of the money, wonder if roses could replace money here?
But I still could not figure it out.
Now two guys are playing golf and they bet.
when both hit their best drive, one of them thinks
\"we are looking at a pretty fancy run for the roses\"
I could not understand this, and if there is any implication.
