There was no answer. She tapped onthe door again, but still there was no reply. From inside the next office, shecould hear the sound of voices, so she opened the door and went in.Although shewas sure it was the same office she had been in two weeks before when she hadhad the interview with Mr. King, it looked quite different now. In fact, ithardly looked like an office at all. The employees were just standing aroundchatting and smoking. At the far end of the room, somebody must have just tolda good joke, she thought, because there was a loud burst of laughter as shecame in. For a moment she had thought they were laughing at her. Then one of themen looked at his watch, clapped his hands and said something to the others.Quickly they all went to their desks and, in a matter of seconds, everyone washard at work. No one paid any attention to Marie. Finally she went up to theman who was sitting at the desk nearest to the door and explained that this washer first day in the office. Hardly looking up from his work, he told her tohave a seat and wait for Mr. King, who would arrive at any moment. Then Marierealised that the day's work in the office began just before Mr. King arrived.Later she found out that he lived in Connecticut and came into Manhattan on thesame train every morning, arriving in the office at 9:35, so that his staffknew exactly when to start working.

Part B Read the texts from a magazine article in which five women talkedabout their slimming failures. For questions 1 to 5, match the name of eachwoman (1 to 5) to each of the statements (A to G) given below. Mark youranswers on your ANSWER SHEET.

GlynisDavis:I first piled on the pounds when I was pregnant and I couldn't lose themafterwards. Then I joined a slimming club. My target was 10 stone and I lost 2stone 2lbs in sixmonths. I felt great and people kept saying how good I looked. But Christmascame and I started to slip back into my old eating habits. I told myself I'dlose the weight at slimming classes in the new year... but it didn't happen.Instead of losing the pounds, I put them on. I'd lost the willpower and triedto convince myself that the odd bag of crisps didn't make any difference - butthe scales don't lie.
Roz Juma:Tobe honest, I never weigh myself any more - I've learned to be happy withmyself. It seemed ridiculous to feel guilty about every morsel that passed mylips. My philosophy is simple: You shouldn't be preoccupied with food anddieting. Instead, you should get on with life and stop dreaming about asuper-thin body. This is obviously the size I'm meant to be and, most of all,I'm happy with it.
LesleyGodwin:I was very happy after winning Young Slimmer of the Year. I'd look inthe mirror unable to believe this slim creature was me. That might have been myproblem - perhaps I didn't relate to my reflection any more. Winning a nationalcompetition makes everything worse, though, because you feel the eyes of theworld are on you. I feel a failure because I've put on weight again... I findit humiliating and embarrassing.
RosLangford:Before moving in with my husband Gavin, I'd always been about 8 stone, but domestic bliss went straight to my waist and I put on 2 stone in a year.Every so often I try to go on a diet... I'm really good for a few days, thenend up eating the children's leftovers or gorging on chocolate - my weakness.I'd like to be slim, but right now my priorities are the children and home. Imay be more motivated when the kids are older.
JuliaMinifie:I'm a compulsive eater. I can't control my urges and I really lovecakes. When I'm slim I feel like a million dollars - and when I'm not I getvery depressed. Over the years I'd tried and failed with just about every diet.I was determined I'd never put the weight back on, but at some stage along theline I lost my resolution, and it started to creep on again... Certainly I willface the same problem in the future.

Now match each of the women (1 to 5) to theappropriate statement.Note: there are two extra statements. Statements1. GlynisDavis [A] I put on weight after I got married.2. Roz Juma [B] The heavier, themerrier.3. Lesley Godwin [C] Facts speak louder than words.4. Ros Langford [D]I like myself as I am.5. Julia Minifie [E] I'm constantly at war with myweight.[F] Fame doesn't necessarily mean success.[G] I think I'll be slim again.
