不可照字面理解，切忌望文生义
1. His wife is a woman in labour.
他妻子是个临产妇女。[误]：他妻子是个劳动妇女。
a woman in labour 意思是\"临产的妇女\"，这里的意思是“阵痛”“分娩”。
2.They are talking turkey.
他们在坦率地交谈。[误]：他们在谈论火鸡。
talk turkey意思是\"坦率的交谈\"，talk about the turkey才是\"谈论火鸡\"的意思.
3. His success made us sit up and take notice.
他的成功使我们大吃一惊。[误]：他的成功使我们坐起来看。
sit up and take notice 意思是\"大吃一惊\"
4. He paid his debt to nature.
他死了。[误]：他理所当然地还了债。
pay one's debt to nature 也可以说pay the debt of nature,意思是“死去”。
5. He took her for a ride.
他欺骗了她。[误]：他开车带她兜风。
take sb. for a ride 意思是\"欺骗某人\"、“带某人到某地把他处死”。
6. It's yours for the asking.
只要你问，它就是你的。[误]：该你问了。
for the asking 意思是“只要你要”。
7. The fellow is a second-story man.
那个人是个夜盗。[误]：那个人住二楼。
a second-story man 意思是夜盗，尤其是指从楼上窗户里爬进室内偷东西 得人。
8. She married with the left hand.
她和门第比自己低的人结婚了。[误]：她和一个左撇子结婚了。
9. He is employed in watering the garden.
他忙于浇花。
be employed in doing sth. 的意思是\"忙于做某事\",be employed to do sth.才意为\"被雇来做某事\".
10.That girl walks the streets.
那个女孩是个妓女。[误]：那个女孩在街上到处走。
walk the streets意思是“当妓女”，表示在街上走应该说walk in the street(s).
11. The girl looks like a million dollars.那个女孩很动人。[误]：那个女孩看起来像个百万富翁。
12. Don't make a fuss of them!不要娇惯他们。[误]：不要对那些事大惊小怪。
make a fuss of sb.意思是\"娇惯某人\"，make a fuss about sth.而才是\"对某事大惊小怪\"。
13. She gave him the lie.
她指责他撒了谎。[误]：她对他撒了谎。
give sb. the lie 意思是“指责某人撒谎”。
14. He is a good sailor.他不会晕船。[误]：他是个好水手。
如果要表达\"他是个好水手\"应该说He is a skilled seaman.
15. The boy is a love child.这个男孩是个私生子。
a love child 意思是“私生子”，而 a lovely child 才是“可爱的孩子”。
16. She bought some salts.她买了泻药。[误]：她买食盐。
17. After his ship came in , he went abroad.
他发财后就出国了。[误]：他的船来后就出国了。
ship comes in 意思是“发财”、“有钱”。
18. Her husband is a confidence man .
她丈夫是个骗子。[误]：她丈夫是个有信心的人。
a confidence man意思是“骗子”。
19. I never see her but I want to kiss her.我一见到她就想吻她。[误]：我从未见她，但我仍想吻她。
根据英语惯用法，在否定词never[hardly, etc.]之后，but的意思是“一...就”“每当...总是”。例如：It never rains but it poirs.(不雨则已，一雨倾盆。)
20.She is talking horse.
她在吹牛。[误]：她在谈马。
talk house是惯用短语，意思是吹牛说大话相当于talk big.
