报道中的“stamp tax on stock trading”指的就是“股票交易印花税”，也可写作“stamp tax on securities trading”。它是从普通“印花税”（stamp tax）发展而来的，是专门针对股票交易发生额征收的一种税。

印花税率的高低可以直接地改变股票的交易成本，因此监管层通过调整印花税率可以起到调控股市的作用。不过，从世界主要股票市场发展经验看，取消股票印花税是大势所趋。目前，美、加等国则早已取消证券交易印花税。
