Hello, I am a doctor, Rehabilitation Doctor, for which the abbreviation is RD. That is a relative new branch in the field of medicine. So many people don’t know the exact meaning of rehabilitation.
The rehabilitation medicine, first developed by an America doctor, Howard A. Rusk, has a history about only 50 years. The aim of rehabilitation medicine is to maximize the potential to restore a person who has an impairment, or an incapacity for service or work, as a result of a service injury or disease to at least the same physical and psychological state, and at least the same social, vocational and educational status, as he or she had before the injury or disease.
As many other branches of medicine, there are various sub-branches in rehabilitation medicine, such as neurological rehabilitation, orthopedic rehabilitation, pediatric rehabilitation, and so on. An important point with which rehabilitation medicine is quite different from other medical specialties, is the team approach. Doctors, nurses, therapists, psychologist, social workers, even relatives of the patient should work together to solve various kinds of problems for the best recovery for patients.
The levels of rehabilitation medicine are quite dissimilar across countries. In developed nations such as USA, there will be new techniques and ideas almost every day. For example, spasticity, a problem interfering the motor ability of patients, can be treated now with Botox, a drug blocking neuromuscular transmission through a three-step process. Further, recently, people found that this drug could also relieve pain for some patients. Three-dimensional analysis combined with EMG investigation is another example, which can make us perform an in-depth research in terms of human motion. Actually, it is impossible to introduce the progress thoroughly with several sentences. |
