I often get online to new forum  just like readfree.net where we can discuss anything we want in English; look for Penfriends and Penpals; ask, answer and discuss words, idioms, phrasal verbs and other issues for us language learners; and generally use the English we know.

Reading is an important way of gaining information in foreign language learning, which is also a basic skill for a foreign language learner.

I think there are three ways to improve our reading speed:
Firstly, reading the articles from the beginning to the end without intervals so to catch the rough idea of the articles on the whole. Never waste too much time on some new words and single sentences.
Secondly, we may keep time when reading articles.
The last but not the least, when reading articles, we can point at the words with our finger or pen point and our eyes move with the finger quickly so that we are able to read very fast.

Newspaper as good reading materials can widen our sight and richen our knowledge.

As a result, newspaper has been playing an improtant role in my English reading.

Reading is a bottom-up course for me.

Bottom-up models claim that the reader perceives every letter, organizes the perceived letters into words, and then organizes the words into phrases, clauses, and sentences. Meaning, at any level (e.g. word or phrase), is accessed only once processing at previous (i.e. lower) levels has been completed. Thus the reader will process all the letters in a word before the meaning of the word is accessed; likewise, the reader will process all the words in a phrase or a clause before constructing its meaning.
Top down theories, in contrast, posit a non-linear view of the process in which comprehension begins with the readers (or listeners) contribution, i.e. from higher levels of processing, and proceeds to use the lower levels selectively. A classic top-down theory is Goodman's view of reading as a 'psycholinguistic guessing game'.
Recent views see comprehension as drawing upon both top-down and bottom-up processing, in what is known as interactive processing.

i don't know how to answer this question, because i think any of the three methods can lead to a good effect if you consist in reading. also, i think that each method has its advantage.

for example, bottom-up model can help you to practise your words, phases, and expression. as for top down theories, it will help you to improve your comprehension.

then, it seems that an interactive processing maybe the best, but that needs you to decide which methods will you use in a certain time. there are some principles:
1. if the article is easy, and you can understand every word, every phrase and every sentence easily. use the top down methods, which will improve you reading speed considerably.
2. if the article is a little difficult. adopt the top down method at first, and use the context to guess those you don't understand.then, analyse them again, and put them into the context to approve it's correctness. that is the bottom up method.
3. if the article is too difficult to understand. unfortunately, you have to perceives every letter, organizes the perceived letters into words, and then organizes the words into phrases, clauses, and sentences. but, after all you can still adopt the 2nd method to approve your understand.

these are my opinion, thanks to discuss.

mnn....I believe it is decided by the materials what you are reading.
As to the different material, the method shoud be different.well, in fact, i prefer the top-down method in daily life.

是的,阅读理解一定要根据不同的文本材料的不同特征,采取相应的阅读模式,“自上而下”和“ 自下而上”,“交互式阅读”都有自己的优缺点。读者还要结合自己的背景知识即background knowledge来辅助阅读,这里面也牵涉到另外一种理论,即"schemata theory" .

schemata theory is closly related to one's background knowledge( also called prior knowledge), which is very impoortant for successful reading in that:
1) Prior knowledge helps the learner remember new information by creating more memory cues;
2) Prior knowledge fills gaps in the new knowledge, supplies conventional details, and changes some ideas;
3) Prior knowledge of simpler component skills is necessary in order to learn new procedural or rule-governed intellectual skills

Reading in English? Bottom up or top-down? neither of them, it's SKELETON.

if the reading is not novel, you can always read like this.

1. the first paragraph is the main meaning of the whole article, while highly condensed

2. the first sentence of each paragraph is always the main meaning of this paragraph. the rest is the supportive material.

3. the last paragraph is the conclusion, or it could raise some questions for consideration.

That's it, quite simple, right? just grasp the skeleton method, you can master most of the conprehension reading articles, and on the other side, your writing skill can be improved too.
