Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, the world‘s biggest bank by assets, is looking to invest in a Chinese bank in a sign that Japan’s stronger financial institutions are turning overseas after a decade-long hiatus.
An alliance between the subsidiary of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, which began operations yesterday with assets of Y162,714bn ($1,395bn), and a Chinese bank would be the first significant cross-border banking tie-up between the two countries.
Formed from the merger last year of two of Japan‘s four biggest banks, Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ is one of the healthier Japanese banks with a capital adequacy ratio of about 12 per cent.
The bank declined to name specific candidates. But Japanese media reported that the bank was in talks with Bank of China, one of China‘s “Big Four” commercial lenders.
BoC has attracted a $3.1bn investment from a consortium led by Royal Bank of Scotland, as well as from Temasek, the Singapore state investment company, ahead of its expected $8bn listing this year.
While RBS and other foreign banks, including Bank of America, UBS and HSBC, have made headline-grabbing investments in China recently, Japanese banks have been more cautious. MUFG has set up alliances with only two smaller Chinese lenders.
Most of the leading Japanese banks were forced to retreat from investments overseas after the bursting of the country‘s economic bubble in the 1990s. This left them not only under-capitalised but also indebted to the Japanese government, which was forced to bail them out.
