On 13th Dec 2005, Stanley tookie williams was executed by the court of California, which raised strong protests in the US. Thousands of people made a demonstration before the execution ground and lot of Media reported furiously about the government's killing of an innocent person. Besides, many websites opened in one night just to show their objection and mourned for williams.
Stanley tookie williams, the co-founder of the most notorious crips street gang, was on a death row for more than 20 years in San quentn. In 1979, he and other gangsters rushed into a convenient store and killed a young worker with guns. Two years later, Williams made another crime by shooting three Taiwanese (a couple and their child). On 1981, stanley was sentenced to death by the highest court of California. However, in prison he turned to be an anti-gang activist by writing many books for children to keep them from becoming gangsters. In his books, he made a portrait of gangsters both in spirit and in behavior. He tried to show us a scene and provide various reasons to elucidate why those youngsters go to the wrong road. Having known such different gangsters described in the books, children may develop a explicit view about gangsters. Perhaps they will not be as interested in imitating gangsters as before. Thus, stanley was nominated by a member of swiss parliament for Nobel Peace Prize in 1999 and was visited by ex-president of South Africa!
I just found in the internet a very popular radio programe in the US. \"Democracy Now\" is hosted by a very famous female journalist - Amy Goodman. From my view, it is not controlled by government and always reports some debatable topics. So when I listened to its report of 13th Dec,2005, the day when tookie williams was executed, I was totally shocked by the report. It is different from what the execution is in China. In our country, execution is a very serious thing that is not open to media or ordinary people. Moreover, it is hard to imagine that the media speak out their opposite opinion about the execution. They will get warned or punished by the government because individual is refrained from showing their doubtness about the decision of the authority, though, corruption of the officials has been a very hot issue recently. Thus, if stanley tookie williams is in China, there won't be so many negative reports. The media will not make their opposition public and other protestors will only write their anger on the internet and still worry that it will not be tracked by the cyber police. Another difference is that stanley is nominated for Nobel Prize several times. It will be only a dream in China and will never come true. I think maybe this is because of the different ideology we have (socialism and capitalism).
As to whether stanley is guilty, I am now confused after reading some supportive and anti-supportive reports from the internet. From the actual crime he committed in 1979, it seems that he is guilty but when you look deeply into the case, you find some spirit in it. What makes stanley insist for such a long time that he is innocent? Why the professors in Sweden nominated him for the peace prize several times? Why are there so many people supporting him? From the current information, it is hard to judge whether stanley is an innocent or guilty person |
