The Dragon Boat Festival
In 278 BC, the year when Qu Yuan was 62, he lingered around the Mi Luo River on hearing the word that the Qin’s troops had conquered the capital of Chu, his own country. He was in deep sorrow and drowned himself in the Mi Luo River by attaching a stone to himself. That day was May the fifth in lunar calendar.
Chu’s people admire Qu Yuan very much. When people around Mi Luo River heard the news of Qu’s suicide, they all came one after another, rowing fishing boats, waving bamboo sticks to search for Qu’s body high and low but in vain. They all went despaired and missed Qu so much. They worried that Qu’s body might be eaten by fishes and shrimps in the river, so, they rowed their boats and fed zong zi, a wrapped rice food to the fishes and shrimps. Thereafter, whenever it is May the fifith in lunar calendar, every household in China will wrap and eat zong zi in memory of the great poet Qu Yuan. This is the origin of Chinese people’s traditional festival, The Dragon Boat Festival.

From then on, every year on May 5th, Chinese families would make rice dumplings and eat them, honoring the great poet Quyuan. This then became the Chinese traditional festival - The Dragon boat festival.

In 278 BC, at his age of 62, Qu Yuan was so sad and angry to hear the news that the troop of the State of Qin broke through Chu’s Capital. He grabbed a large stone and leaped into the river. The day he made suicide was the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

The people of Chu loved Qu Yuan so much that they quickly headed for the river, rowing their fishing boats and holding bamboo sticks in search of Qu Yuan’s body. However, it was so disappointed that they failed to find anything. In fear of Qu Yuan’s body being eaten by fish, the people of Chu rowed the boats and threw rice dumpling into the river to feed fish. From then on, on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, every Chinese family will wrap rice dumpling in memory of the great poet and patriot Qu Yuan. That is what Chinese called Dragon Boat Festival.

Qu Yuan was deeply loved and respected by Chu people. Hearing his suicide news, the people living near Miluo River all came to search Qu Yuan’s body in boats with bamboo poles used, but nothing was found. They were very disappointed and missed Qu Yuan greatly. They worried his body would be eaten by fishes and shrimps in the river, so they boated to throw glutinous rice dumplings to feed them. From then on, on every lunar May 5, Chinese people will process glutinous rice dumpling and eat them in memory of this great poet. That is Chinese people’s traditional festival “ Lunar May 5 Day”.

   The Chu Empire's people were crazy about QuYuan. Heard of his suicide, the people around JuLuo River hurry along there in succesion. Rowing the hooker, catching the bamboo pole, they tried everywhere to refloatation Quyuan's body but to catch nothing. They were very disappointed and they were very miss him. And at most  they were warried that Quyuan's body will be ate up by fish and shrimp, so they rowed their boat, and flung glutinous rice conglomeration rolled by reed at the River to feed the fish and shrimp. As from, every year China Calendar May 5th, every family roll glutinous rice and eat rolled glutinous rice conglomeration to present their miss to Quyuan, the Great Poem. This is the chinese traditional festival Dragon Boat Festival.

这是一种解译性的译法，“pyramid-shaped glutinous dumplings wrapped in reed or bamboo leaves ”看起来的确比较繁杂，也有人干脆就用“zongzi”。比如说“肉粽”就可以被译为“zongzi with meat filling”。

端午节是这样译的，可是本文没有涉及到赛龙舟，这样的标题让不了解背景的人感到费解啊，不是吗？一点儿愚见，呵呵

   确实如此。本节摘自朱一飞、叶盼云、池正杰编著．孙骊王译：《中国文化历史故事》，上海外语教育出版社，1989年,第88页“端午节”一般译为the Dragon Boat Festival，但是这里还没有提到赛龙舟的习俗，所以有人认为似乎还是译为the Double Fifth Festival为好。
