Lewis Trondheim

Lewis Trondheim was born in 1964 and spent his childhood in the french town of Fontainebleau. In 1987 he met Jean-Christophe Menu, an aspiring cartoonist who turned him on to the world of comics. In 1990, together with four other cartoonists, Menu and Trondheim co-founded L'Association, a publishing company which would go on to publish some of the most revolutionary alternative European comics of the decade.

A hugely prolific and well-regarded cartoonist, Trondheim is best known for two full-color album series —the comedy-adventure-fantasy series “Lapinot” ("McConey" in the U.S) and the sword-and-sorcery series Donjon (done in collaboration with Joann Sfar) — as well as many diverse other works, including children's albums, unique one-shots, and new work for L'Association. He has ventured into autobiography with the graphic novel Approximativement (see The Nimrod #1), and his book-length silent strip La Mouche ("The Fly") has been turned into an extended series of five-minute animated cartoons.

Fantagraphics began publishing Trondheim in 1997, with the release of Harum Scarum, the first volume of "The Spiffy Adventures of McConey." The "McConey" series features a continuing cast of characters (including the rabbit McConey, a cat, and a dog), but each album is set in a different milieu and time period, and the cast members, while maintaining a certain continuity of personality, appear in different roles. Thus Harum Scarum is a horror thriller set in a big European city of the '30s, but other volumes (only available in French thus far) include a Western, a Medieval adventure, and a kids' story (with the characters as gradeschoolers). The second Fantagraphics McConey volume, The Hoodoodad, is a contemporary comedy thriller that focuses more on sitcom-type character comedy.

Trondheim found a new home for his English-language work with NBM, which published his Donjon work in the black and white comic Dungeon and has since collected it in two full-color graphic novels. A second comic, Oddballz, serialized his further McConey adventures and his collaboration with Manu Larcenet, Astronauts of the Future. NBM has also released the wordless gag book Mister O and Happy Halloween, Little Santa, his collaboration with Thierry Robin.

In 2006, Roaring Brook Press will release the first album of Trondheim’s collaborations with Fabrice Parme, Tiny Tyrant; the new graphic album publisher First Second will release his wordless solo book Alieeen; and NBM will release a third Dungeon book illustrated by Christophe Blain, Dungeon the Early Years: The Night Shirt.

In recent years, Trondheim astonished his readers by first announcing that he was retiring from drawing, and killing off his main character McConey in a final album, Thankfully, he has proven incapable of completely retiring and has released several more albums in France, most of them once again autobiographical in nature; McConey, however, remains dead.

Trondheim now lives in Montpellier, France, with Brigitte Findakly, his colorist and wife of 10 years, and their two children.

Mister O
Lewis Trondheim
Goofy silent one page gags crammed with little frames showing Mr. O, a round doodle of a man, desperately trying to get over across that darn chasm and somehow never quite making it, over to the other side. Will keep you in stitches for pages. More of Trondheim’s genius at work!
"Trondheim's nimble pen strokes can imbue even a squiggle (or an "O") with humor and pathos. We turn each page as much to see if Trondheim will let his little man off the cliff as what he'll invent to keep him on it."
-Washington Post
"I can't get over how inventive Mr. Trondheim is in the exercise of such a basic idea. It reminds me somewhat of the better Road Runner cartoons. The man is a genius."
-David LeBlanc, Comic Book Net
"Lewis Trondheim's work falls somewhere between pure genius and "you've gotta be kidding me." The fact that Trondheim is able to convey emotion in a balloon-head stick figure is significant."
-Michael Sangiacomo, Cleveland Plain Dealer/Newhouse papers
"At first, the busy, crowded pages and postage-stamp-sized panels of Lewis Trondheim's book Mister O (NBM) seem repetitive and slightly intimidating, but each of his single-page, 60-panel cartoons opens up into its own fascinating, demented little world. Each of the 30 cartoons wordlessly follows a little anthropomorphic blob as it attempts to cross a crevice in increasingly outlandish ways, invariably with tragic results. Trondheim's sick, hilarious visual gags seem like creative new twists on Wile E. Coyote's famously unsuccessful obsession..."
The Onion
"The effect is reminiscent of a collection of Charlie-Brown-and-the-football strips or Road Runner cartoons stripped down to their barest, micro-minimal essence of line, color and existential frustration, and ending up with something universal and hilarious."
-Publishers Weekly starred review
9x113/4, hardcover, full color, $13.95, ISBN 1-56163-382-8

Lewis Trondheim

Lewis Trondheim (born December 11, 1964; real name: Laurent Chabosy) is an extremely prolific French cartoonist and one of the founders, in 1990, of the independent publisher L'Association. Both his silent comic La Mouche and Kaput and Z鰏ky have been made into animated cartoons. He explained his choice of pseudonym after the Norwegian city of Trondheim as follows: "As a last name I wanted to use a city's name, but Lewis Bordeaux or Lewis Toulouse didn't sound so good. Then I thought about this city, Trondheim… Maybe someday I will publish an album under my real name, in order to remain anonymous."[1]
Biography

Lewis Trondheim
Lewis Trondheim was first known as the author of Les formidables aventures de Lapinot (later to be translated to English as The Spiffy Adventures of McConey). He invented the character in the late 1980s as a way to learn cartooning. The result was an initial 500 page graphic novel, Lapinot et les carottes de Patagonie. All the while, he was publishing short stories for the satirical French magazine Psikopat.
After his book Slaloms was awarded what was then called the Alph'Art Coup de coeur (First comic book prize) in 1993, Trondheim was offered to bring his burgeoning series to a major publisher, Dargaud, while he continued churning out more personal books for L'Association and other independent French publishers such as Cornélius. From there onwards, Trondheim began to enjoy a steady rise in popularity.
The following years represented a period of increasing activity, as Trondheim began to work on many different projects. He first created La Mouche ("The Fly") for the Japanese market, and then redrew a French version from scratch, after which the character was adapted as an animated cartoon.
Trondheim's greatest breakthrough after Lapinot is arguably Dungeon (in French, Donjon), an ambitious series which he created with Joann Sfar, and which has enjoyed a fair amount of popular success.
Trondheim's "retirement"
In 2004, after a long and intensive period during which he steadily released new books at a frantic pace, Lewis Trondheim announced he was more or less retiring from the world of comic strips, stating he did not want his passion to become a "job". He did draw and write a few stories within the following year, including a book reflecting on his decision to slow down, though the releases occurred at a much slower pace.
It has long been speculated he used this time partly to create another ambitious work, Le blog de Frantico, which was a comic strip blog published daily on the web for a whole year under the Frantico pseudonym. In interviews and on his web sites, Trondheim alternately admits and denies having written Le blog de Frantico, though another author, Sébastien Lesage eventually stepped up as the real author, saying he had asked Trondheim to help him maintain the mystery.
Another recent Trondheim occupation is that of editorial director at Delcourt, where he direct Shampooing, a collection of comic books for young readers.
In 2006, Trondheim was awarded the Grand Prix de la ville d'Angoulême at the Angoulême International Comics Festival, arguably the most prestigious award in the field.
Bibiliography
Trondheim has written or drawn more than a hundred titles, spanning a large spectrum of genres; some of the most notable are:
The spiffy adventures of McConey (Les formidables aventures de Lapinot; 10 official volumes), which mix satire and fantasy. The main characters are all animals: for instance McConey is a shy and easygoing rabbit, while Richard is an engaging cat with a loud mouth and a knack for getting into trouble. The stories alternate between modern France and stock historical settings. The recurring characters in the series can be thought of as actors who don't always play the same people, but always play the same type of roles.
Dungeon (Donjon; more than 25 volumes), co-written with Joann Sfar, an extremely ambitious series which attempts to chronicle a Dungeons & Dragons-like dungeon through three separate epochs. The tone varies from heroic to comic to rather dark.
Several children comics, among them: Le roi catastrophe (8 volumes), drawn by Fabrice Parme, a series about a boy king; Monstrueux (3 volumes), featuring a young French family resembling Trondheim's, and their pet monster Jean-Christophe; Kaput and Z鰏ky (2 volumes), featuring space aliens, which in recent years, has been converted into a television program; and more recently A.L.I.E.E.N., an "alien children book" Trondheim jokingly claims to have found in a country field while on vacation.
Collections of short, modern comic strip fables, sometimes starring simplified, potato-shaped characters, the bulk of which has been published by L'Association (Genèses apocalyptiques, Non, non, non, Le pays des trois sourires, etc.)
Autobiographical comics, such as those collected in Approximate Continuum Comics, which later formed his book Approximativement; as well as his more recent Carnet de bord series (3 volumes). Newer autobiographical comics are regularly published on his blog under the title Les petits riens.
Various conceptual comics, such as Le dormeur and Psychanalyse, both of which were created entirely with a single photocopied panel, while Bleu and La nouvelle pornographie are both billed as "abstract comic books".
About English translations
McConey has been published in English by Fantagraphics in an edition close to the original. Fantagraphics also published various shorter pieces by Trondheim in the comic The Nimrod. NBM has published Dungeon, both in comic book and graphic novel formats. An English version of A.L.I.E.E.N. (retitled A.L.I.E.E.E.N.) has been published by First Second.
