澳国大使说拜拜


　　澳大利亚驻华大使石励先生即将完成使命离京，此刻他和夫人对中国恋恋不舍，
中澳两国的关系过去四年卓有成效，双方高层访问频繁，贸易额超过100亿澳元，他
说：

　　在中国，从来没有任何一个时候让人感到乏味。不过，我认为，目前我们所看
到的变革的性质和速度使这个时期特别令人关注。尤其是北京，我们亲眼目睹着她
在日新月异地变化。每周都有方便人民生活的新设施开张。许多人在如何安排时间、
如何花钱方面的选择比过去都多多了。

　　两件事特别引起了我们的注意。第一，我们每次去长城、颐和园、故宫、天安
门广场或者人民大会堂，总能看到大批中国人是首次来参观这些著名的景点。他们
来自外省，一辈子老听说这些地方，但直到现在才得以到北京来亲自看看。同样，
我也知道，从来没有像现在这样多的中国人在全国到处旅游。显然，他们为能深入
地了解自己的国家感到兴奋，这对中国是有益的。

　　我们看到，中国人民现在对教育非常重视。这是第二件令我们特别感兴趣和感
到高兴的事。由于中国社会1978年以来已经发生变化，人们似乎重新发现，尽可能
获得最好的教育非常重要。正规的中小学以及大学教育变得比任何时候都更受重视。
同时，人们也渴求从一切可能的渠道获取知识。这不仅对个人，而且对整个中国都
是件好事。

　　我们在华四年期间也学到了很多。我的夫人尤其如此。她在许多好朋友和老师
的帮助下，学到了一些中文。我们真舍不得走，但又相信，由于我们现在更加了解
中国，我们对整个世界也就有了更多的了解。

　　On　26　January　Australian　Ambassador　R.　C.　Smith　gave　a　
speech　to　commemorate　Australia　Day　and　reflect　on　his　
upcoming　departure.　Mr　Smith's　four-year　tenure　has　been　　
marked　by　numerous　high-levl　exchanges　between　China　and　
Australia　and　the　rise　in　two-way　trade　to　over　10　billion　
Australian　dollars.　Below　are　excerpts　from　the　speech:

　　No　time　has　ever　been　uninteresting　in　China,　but　I　do　
think　that　the　nature　and　pace　of　the　changes　we　are　seeing　
now　makes　this　an　especially　interesting　time.　　Beijing　in　
particular　is　transforming　before　our　eyes.　　New　amenities　　
are　opening　every　week,　and　for　many　people　the　choices　they　
have　about　how　to　spend　their　time　and　income　are　greater　
than　ever.

　　Two　things　have　been　especially　interesting　to　us.　　The　
first　is　that　every　time　we　go　to　the　Great　Wall,　the　
Summer　Palace,　the　Imperial　Palace　Museum,　Tiananmen　Square　or　
the　Great　Hall　of　the　People,　we　see　enormous　numbers　of　
Chinese　people　who　are　visiting　these　famous　sites　for　the　
first　time.　　They　are　people　from　the　provinces　who　have　
heard　about　these　places　all　their　lives　but　have　never　　
until　now　been　able　to　come　to　Beijing　and　see　them　for　
themselves.　　In　the　same　way,　I　know　that　people　are　
travelling　all　over　China　in　greater　numbers　than　ever.　　The　
excitement　of　discovering　their　own　country　is　very　evident　
and　can　only　be　good　for　China.

　　The　second　thing　of　special　interest　and　pleasure　for　us　
has　been　to　witness　the　enormous　interest　which　Chinese　　
people　are　taking　in　education.　　As　their　society　has　　
changed　since　1978,　people　seem　to　have　discovered　anew　the　
importance　of　acquiring　the　best　possible　education.　　Formal　
school　and　university　education　has　become　more　important　than　
ever,　and　as　well　there　is　a　hunger　for　learning　from　every　
possible　source.　　This　is　good　not　just　for　individuals,　but　
also　for　China　as　a　whole.

　　We　too　have　learned　much　in　our　four　years　here.　This　　
is　especially　true　of　my　wife,　who　with　the　help　of　good　
friends　and　teachers　has　been　able　to　learn　something　of　the　
Chinese　language.　　We　leave　here　reluctantly,　but　confident　
that　because　we　know　China　better,　so　we　know　more　about　　
the　world.
