送小孩到国外去学习须谨慎从事

现在越来越盛行送十几岁的小孩子到国外留学,人数在急剧增加。他们的家长对国外的教育抱有不切实际的幻想。外国院校举办的教育展览把国外的学校说得天花乱坠,使他们听了介绍之后便心动变为行动。

可是,把小孩子送到国外学习并不一定会带来好的结果。许多学生缺乏适应性和灵活性,他们很难溶入国外新的环境。由于在文化上难以适应,即缺乏在国外陌生环境下生存的能力,他们往往会受到所谓“文化震荡”的冲击。缺乏必要的观察能力,使他们难以理解东道主国家人民的行为表现,他们也就无法与当地人打成一片。缺乏适应性以及交流和交往能力必然会使自己感到孤立。

感到孤独和在生活上不能自理(由于他们的家长对他们过于溺爱和娇惯)他们会经常想家和情绪低落。更重要的是,由于他们在学习上没有打好坚实的基础,不能适应外语环境下的学习。由于他们缺乏独立学习的能力,所以就不可能取得所期望的进步。

于是,许多人便不得不半途而废,放弃来之不易的学习机会。因此,过早地送小孩子到国外学习不一定是件好事情。

如果想要让孩子到国外去见见世面,可以让他们集体参加短期的国外游学项目,住在外国人的家里,参加暑期班的学习,在所在地开展一些旅游活动。但这些团组必须有专门的老师陪同,提供全程性的指导和帮助。

Sending your children to study abroad should be cautious !

Nowdays, sending teenage children to study abroad is getting more and more popular , and the amount is sharply increasing . Their parents have illusory imaginations on foreign education. They take the actions immediately after the introduction in the overseas education exhibition held by foreign schools. However, the truth that the children sent to study abroad does not always lead to success. Many students are lack of adaptability and flexibility that they hardly melt in the new circumstances, they may have the impact of cultural shock. Without necessary ability of observation,they can’t understand the behavior of foreigners , which makes them can’t get along well with foreigners. And the lonely feeling must come from the absence of adaptability and communication. The dependence on their parents will make them homesick and have bad mood. The more important one is that they can’t get the expected progress ,for they neither have enough capabiliity on study nor adapt the atmosphere on foreign language study . Then many of them may give up the hard-won opportunity on the halfway. Therefore, it is not always a good thing to send the children to study abroad. If you want to let children know more about the world, they can join the short-term international study project with other members. They can live in the foreign families,and take part in the study of summer holidays,or have some traveling activities .All of the groups should be accompanied with professional teachers who can offer guidance and help at any time.

Thereupon, many of them have to give up the hard-earned learning opportunity halfway. Hence, sending children to study abroad when they are still too young is not necessarily a good thing.

If parents want their children to see the elephant abroad, they can let their children attend short-term overseas tour study programs, stay at foreigners’ families, take summer vacation courses, and have some traveling there. But there must be some specially arranged teachers in the teams to keep company with the children and provide guidance and help all along.

Feeling lonely and incapable in taking care of themselves in daily life (due to too much parental care or overindulgence), teenage students will often feel homesick and get depressed. More importantly, without solid foundation for learning, they cannot adjust themselves to education in foreign languages. Incompetent for independent study, these students cannot get the progress they expected.

As a result, many of these teenage students have to drop out, giving up their precious opportunities in education. Therefore, sending children, who are still too young, to study abroad is not necessarily a good choice.

To broaden their children’s horizons in a foreign country, parents can let them together take short-term international travel study programs. In such programs, the children can stay at the home of foreigners, attend summer schools, and make excursions around where they sojourn. However, it is necessary to have tutors who provide supervision and guidance throughout the programs.

So a lot of them have to give up their hard-earned chance of studying abroad and return home. Therefore it may not be a good idea at all to send children to study abroad at too early an age.
If young students want to broaden their vision of the world, it is advisable to send them abroad in groups for short home-stay study programs. They can live with a host family, attend a summer school, and join in excursions in and around the host city. But these groups must be accompanied by a designated teacher who can provide orientation, guidance and assistance all the way.

我给大家提一点建议:我们应该把每一次的翻译实践都当作一个学习、应用、研究和总结提高的过程。汉英翻译是个十分艰巨复杂的任务,在进行翻译时我们不能只是简单地依靠自己的头脑和几本词典。我们必须依靠多方面的资源:第一,我们学过的确实已经掌握的那部分极为有限的知识;第二,各种有效的工具书和参考书(要不厌其烦地去查阅,包括常用的词语,多查找一些例句);第三,从广度和深度上学会利用互联网资源(包括中文和英文的网站)。互联网能为我们提供大量的知识和信息,能帮助我们解决翻译中的许多难题。这个取之不尽用之不竭的宝库如果不充分利用实在可惜。如果大家都养成勤查词典和参考书,以及勤上网查询的习惯,翻译的质量一定会有大幅度的提高。

本期一些重点词语表达注释:

1.mind the pitfalls = beware of the pitfalls:谨防陷阱或暗礁

2. are fantasized by myths about:fantasize – 臆想,幻想 to think about something very pleasant that is unlikely to happen e.g. Don’t fantasize about looking for the perfect job – it’s unrealistic. 抱有不切实际的幻想可以翻译为 fantasized by。myth – 这个词有多个意思:1神话;2根本不可能存在的人或事物a person or thing existing only in imagination, or whose actual existence is not verifiable;3 错误的认识 an idea or story that many people believe, but which is not true 例如Most people think that bats are blind, but this is in fact a myth. 有的人把Ten Big Myths about Copyright翻译成“版权的十大神话”(应译为“关于版权认识的十大误区”);也有人把“误区”翻译为mistaken areas, 这些都是不对的。

3. paint many rosy pictures and tell many glow tales … prompting them into action 说得天花乱坠、绘声绘色,使他们心动变为行动; prompting 这个现在分词短语表示一个结果状语。

4. adapt themselves to new circumstances and situations = adjust themselves to the new environment

5. cultural toughness = cultural adaptability / flexibility. It is an important aspect to be developed by anyone needing to study or work across different cultures. The cultural adaptability index concerns with how a person is perceived in relation to four critical areas: Attitudes (Respect and Cooperativeness), Awareness (Perceptiveness and Empathy), Knowledge (Curiosity and Learning), and Skills (Communication and Collaboration). Students with cultural adaptability will find their work environment more open, more dynamic, more effective, more productive, and less hostile.

汉英翻译,是把汉语原文的意思吃透了之后重新用英语进行表达的过程。它不是简单地"对号入座",而是一种十分复杂的创造性劳动。在进行翻译时,翻译者必须用心地对汉语原文的特点进行理解和分析,这就要求翻译者对汉语语言及其相关的知识和文化具有深厚的功底。翻译者还要考虑到译出语即英语的语法规则、写作风格、表达习惯等。要想把中文的意思用英语准确地表达出来,用比较通顺的英语来表达地道的汉语,翻译者还必须对英语的语法、语义、句法、惯用法以及文化背景等方面具有深刻的了解。
衡量翻译的质量主要看两条基本要求:忠实性与可读性。忠实性就是准确性,要求翻译出来的内容意思既不能增加,也不能减少;既不能加强,也不能减弱。对准确性的要求要看情况,要考虑到原文的题材内容、表达的准确性、体裁类别、功能作用、文学品位、社会和历史背景等诸多因素。可读性就是通顺性和地道性,要求译文符合英语的语法、句法和表达习惯等,使译文让外国读者喜闻乐见。如果翻译的英语不地道,读起来就不是滋味儿,我们常常发现,字对字的翻译有时会让人感到啼笑皆非。

要做一名合格的翻译,首先应打好汉语和英语的基本功,还要学习和研究中外不同的文化,同时还要再学习一定的专业知识。既然汉英翻译是如此艰巨复杂的任务,那么我们应该从哪些方面着手对自己进行培养和训练,来提高我们的汉英翻译能力和水平呢?
汉英翻译能力的培养(translation competence development)涉及以下诸多方面,我们必须加强多方面的翻译意识的锻炼:
要培养对英语的语感和悟性(language intuition - open and alert mind to pick up idioms, specific expressions, etc.);
要培养对英语的判断能力和鉴赏能力(evaluation capacity - Judgment);
要培养对英语的洞察能力和剖析能力(power of observation - Insight);
要培养对英语细微特征的反应能力(linguistic nuances alertness); -
要培养对社会文化和跨文化交流的敏感性(social-cultural sensitivity - Cross-cultural awareness);
要培养对英语和汉语之间差别的意识 (sense of differences between Chinese and English);
要培养对英语和汉语之间的辩证关系的认识 (awareness of the dialectic relationship between Chinese and English);
要培养对英语"洋为中用"的意识 ("use things foreign to serve Chinese purposes");
要培养对英语 "学以致用" 的意识 (apply what you learn to your expressions);
要培养对翻译的多层次、多角度的立体思维方式 (a multi-tier approach )。
一名称职的翻译工作者必须懂得什么是翻译的真谛(a clear conception of what translation is)。
一名优秀的翻译人员必须具有高屋建瓴的视角 (great powers of conception for sophisticated understanding)。


一、翻译过程中的双向立体思维

许多人在思考翻译问题时用的是单一的直线式的思维方式,即只是考虑字面上的意思的转换。我们可以把翻译过程中的双向立体思维模式比喻为上下各四条车道的高速公路,而不是一条车道的单行线。如果不培养这样的思维方法,翻译能力是没法提高的。 翻译标准(多角度、多层面的立体思维)-- "达意、通顺、传神、表形"
Fidelity in meaning,Authenticity in expression, Affinity in style,Identity in form:
从原作的角度来说:必须要体现原文的特点 达意
准确理解原文意思及其内涵与外延的意思 通顺
掌握关键词语的
深度、力度和语流节奏 传神
把握原文的精神风貌、文体风格和文化特征 表形
确定原文的形式,是否整齐对仗押韵,或其他特点
从译文的角度来看:必须要具有英语的特点 由表及里,由此及彼,全面准确地传达原意 译文表达要通顺流畅、正确地道,符合英语习惯 跨越文化障碍,让精神风格在译文中再现 符合英语惯例,使外国读者喜闻乐见

假如我们要把"权为民所用,情为民所系,利为民所谋"翻译成英语,如果是按照直线思维模式,不是我们可以把它翻译为 Use the power for the people, share the feelings with the people and work for the interest of the people. 但这只是传达了基本意思,原文的语言风格比较庄重、它在形式上整齐划一、其内容的座右铭作用等这些特征并未表现出来。如果采用立体思维的方式,我们就可以考虑这样的翻译:Govern by the mandate of the people, empathize with the feelings of the people, and work for the benefits of the people.
要做好汉英翻译工作,需要具备以下多方面的意识:
第一:要对翻译的重要性有深刻的、充分的认识,翻译的对与错、好与坏有时会产生绝然不同的效果。例如,把海南岛的"天涯海角"翻译成了"世界末日": the End of the World (应为Land's End / End of the Earth) 。再如某航空公司的广告中承诺的"一小时内免费送机票上门"变成了"一小时内送免费机票上门":We give you tickets free of charge within one hour.(应为We offer free delivery of your air tickets within one hour after your booking confirmation.)
第二:要善于仔细地、深入地、准确地理解中文原文的意思。这是因为准确的理解是做好翻译的前提。例如,我们常用"摸着石头过河"这个俗语来形容我国的改革开放事业是没有先例。那么"摸着石头过河"应如何翻译成英语呢?有的人把它按字面翻译为crossing the river by feeling the stones。翻译的人根本就没有去认真地理解"摸着石头过河"是什么意思,应该怎样表达才能让外国人能够理解。正确的做法应该是按照下面的步骤去做:
"摸着石头过河"的字面意思如何理解?
它有什么暗含或延伸的意思?
英语里有没有相同或类似的说法?.如果有,就可以直接借用;如果没有,是进行直译还是意译?
如果直译为 crossing the river by feeling the stones是否能被外国人理解?
过河是乘船过(crossing by boat)还是淌水过(wading across),动词用什么形式?
这里的河是大河、中河还是小河 (river, stream, brook, etc.)?
摸的方式是用手摸还是用脚触?
石头是大石头还是小石头(rock, stone. Pebble, etc.)?
如果意译为 learning by experiment / by trial and error是否可取?
直译和意译相结合wading across the stream by feeling the way如何?
Since there is no previous experience to fall back on, we have to "wade across the stream by feeling the way," as we say in Chinese.

第三:中文和英文的对应词有时意思并不相同或者不完全相同,不能照字面翻译。例如下面例子中的"外国人"和foreigner: 如果我们要把"他的英语说得真好,就像外国人一样。"翻译成这样的英语He speaks English so well, he sounds like a foreigner.那么这里的修饰语like a foreigner 是指说得不好,听起来很别扭。这种看上去非常准确的翻译其效果却适得其反。正确的翻译方法应该是:He speaks English so well, he sounds like a native speaker.

第四:有时候中文字面的意思表达不充分,部分信息被省略了或被隐藏起来了。例如下面的例子:特区是个窗口,是技术的窗口,管理的窗口,知识的窗口,也是对外政策的窗口。有人把它翻译为:The special zone is a window. It is a widow for introducing technology, management and knowledge. It is also a window for foreign policy.
这样的翻译外国人是无法理解的,我们必须把那些被省略了或被隐藏起来的信息都翻译出来:The special economics zones are a window opening onto the outside world. They are a window through which to bring in from abroad sophisticated technology, advanced managerial expertise and up-to-date know-how. It is also a window through which to disseminate China's external policies.
与此相似的例子还有很多,如"退耕还林"不是return farmland to forest(把耕地退还给森林),而应该是restore "woodland-converted farm-plots" back for afforesting (把从林地开垦出来的耕地还原成林地,即重新进行植树造林)。"春运"也不能简单地说成是spring transportation(春季的运输) 而是the rush / peak season of passenger transportation during the Spring Festival / Chinese New Year(春节期间的客运高峰)。
第五:有些中文词语没有什么特殊涵义,而与之相对应的英文词语却有着特殊的涵义。例如,与"便宜"、"价廉"相对应的"cheap,"它有时候会带有贬义,成为"质次价低"的意,如cheap jewelries, cheap dresses, cheap furniture 等。我们可以说I bought a cheap watch for my child,对小孩无所谓;但不能说I bought a cheap dress for my girlfriend. 因为这样说会冒犯对方。在后一种情况下必须用inexpensive一词。

第六:避免用中式英语进行表达,而要尽量用地道的英语进行表达。假如我们要把"我过去学过一些法语,但现在都忘了,都还给老师了"这句话翻译成英语,最好不要说 I learned some French in the past. Now I have forgotten it. I've returned it to the teacher. 比较好的说法是 I used to know some French, but I've forgotten it. It has found its way back to my teacher.

再比如我们要用英语说"我攒了一大堆赃衣服,等着周末来洗,"最好不要说I have accumulated a large amount of dirty clothes. I'm going to wash them at the weekend. 比较好的说法是 I have a lot of laundry to catch up at the weekend.

第七:根据不同场合,英语的表达有庄重(formal) 与随意(informal) 之分。比如"禁止吸烟"(No Smoking)、"请勿吸烟"(Thank you for not smoking) 和"为了您和他人的健康,请勿在此吸烟"(For hygiene's sake, please refrain yourself from smoking in this room.)下面两组例子中都各包含有formal- normal - informal 三种文体风格(style):
Please await instructions before dispatching items.
Please wait for instructions before sending items off.
Don't send anything off until you're told to do so.

Essential measures should be undertaken at the earliest opportunity.
One should undertake any necessary measures at the earliest opportunity.
You should do whatever you have to as soon as you can.

第八:要注意各行各业的不同术语的选择。比如"安居工程" 的英译不是housing project for low-income urban residents,而应该按照社会经济用语的习惯翻译为the Affordable Housing Program; 再比如,高速公路上的警示语"请勿疲劳驾驶,"翻译成英语不是Don't drive tiredly,按照交通法规术语应该翻译为Drowsy driving is dangerous 或Drive alert, arrive alive。

第九:注意汉语和英语之间的文化差异。把"相声"翻译成英语不能只是翻译其形式,还要翻译其内涵。翻译成cross talk 外国人不明白;不如翻译为comic dialogue 更好懂。再如,假设我们要把"以外贸为龙头"翻译成英语,能不能直接翻译为with foreign trade as the dragon head呢?这样翻译是很难让外国人明白的,因为"以……为龙头"这个说法是源自耍龙灯的习俗,而多数外国人不一定熟悉中国人的这一习俗。为了取得好的翻译效果,最好是用能够跨越文化障碍的表达方法,如"火车头"或"旗舰":with foreign trade as the locomotive / flagship。

但是不能机械地对待一切类似的翻译问题,我们的头脑里应该有一点辩证法。比如汉语的"鱼米之乡"(land of fish and rice),在英语里有一个类似的说法land of milk and honey,但由于land of fish and rice 外国人也能理解,不会造成跨化交流的障碍,所以我们可以采用land of fish and rice的说法,以保留一点汉语的特色。

第十:对于暗含的意思,必须把它明白地翻译出来,这样便于外国读者理解。例如"东边日出西边雨,道是无晴却有晴"中的"晴"字,它是个双关语,有"天晴"和"爱情"的双重意思。我们在翻译的时候,必须做到二者兼顾:
It's sunny in the east but in the west it's raining hard.
Whether rain or sunshine, he's the sunshine in my heart.

再比如,广告语"这种鞋油为您足下增光"中的"足下"也是个双关语,翻译的时候也必须把两层意思都表达出来:This shoe shine shines your shoes and you look great.

第十一:有时候,比如翻译诗句,光翻译字面上的意思是不够的,还必须把字里行间的深度、力量和美感表达出来。我们以"朱门酒肉臭,路有冻死骨"为例,如果简单地把它翻译为 Wines and meats become rotten in the mansions; Dead bones become rotten at the doors of them,那就没有任何诗意。英语词典里有这样的例句:While the rich are flaunting their wealth the poor are starving on the streets. 这个句子表现了贫富之间的差别和对比。下面这样的翻译则把原文的意思、深度、力量和美感通统都表现出来了:
In the mansions, rolling luxury allows wine and meat to go rotten away;
On the streets, grinding poverty causes dead bodies to freeze and decay.

第十二:汉语和英语在语法语序和句子结构上都有很大的差别。因此,在进行中译英的时候必须要考虑到这些方面的变化。例如,翻译"改革开放开放取得了巨大的成就"这个句子时,我们不能亦步亦趋地将它翻译为:The economic reform and the opening-up have made great achievements. 而是应该这样翻译,把"巨大的成就"当作主语,把主动语态变成被动语态:Great achievements have been made in the economic reform and in our efforts to open-up China to the outside world.

综上所述,一个好的翻译人员必须具有高屋见瓴的视角,要懂得翻译的真谛是什么。要想提高汉英翻译水平,必须加强对上述各种意识的培养。必须养成多层次、多角度的思维习惯。
二、准确的理解是翻译的前提
汉译英的过程是正确理解汉语原文和创造性地用英语再现汉语原文的过程。必须对原文有准确、全面、深刻的理解(sophisticated understanding)才能着手准备进行翻译。

首先看看"把企业推向市场"这个例子。它常常被译成to push enterprises to the market。到底应该怎样理解这个"推"字呢?实际上,这个"推"字有"帮"、"引"、"促"等多种含义。用push这个动词固然不算错,但下面几种译法更加生动:
to lead enterprises to the market
to help enterprises (at their elbow) to the marketplace
to guide enterprises to the market
to let enterprises to "immerse" in the market
to let enterprises learn to "swim" in the market

让企业到水中去学会游泳,呛几口水,就是到市场里去经受锻炼。从表面上看这种译法离原文远了,但实际上它离原文的意思更近。

再看看这个句子:"到2008 年,北京的天会更蓝、水更清、地更绿、环境更美。" 如果我们只是满足于表面的理解,把"天更蓝、水更清、地更绿" 翻译成the sky will be bluer, the water will be clearer, and the land will be greener, 那么它就有可能暗示:北京的天原来不是蓝的、水不是清的、地不是绿的, 而且这三个比较级的形容词可以理解为只?quot;有所改善",力度不够。但实际上我们要表达的意思是,北京现在就是天蓝、水清、地绿;到2008年时的情况是天还要更蓝、水还要更清、地还要更绿。在经过了这样的深层次的理解之后,我们就可以换个角度来进行翻译:
By 2008 Beijing will be even more justified for being / can even
more rightly be called a city with a blue sky, clear water, green land
and a beautiful environment.

这个译文的内涵是:北京的天本来就是蓝的,水本来就是清的,地本来就是绿的,到了2008年情况会变得更好。

从句子结构来看,汉语是一种迭加式的(additive) 语言,句子的各个部分看上去好像都是"并列"的;而英语是一种合成是(synthetic)的语言,句子结构就像一棵树一样,有主干、有枝叉。根据汉语的表达习惯,有时候一个句子可以很长,各个部分完全并列,全都用逗号联系起来。而英语则不同,长句子必须采用主从结构。例如下面这个长句:
"对外经济贸易大学的工商管理硕士(MBA)项目旨在培养 具有现代化管理意识,掌握经营管理的知识和方法,能有效地管理社会化大生产并在国内外市场开展经营与竞争,具有决策应变能力 和分析解决问题的能力,有战略眼光和开拓进取精神的 国际导向型、务实型和复合型的高级经营管理人才。"(128 字)
要把这个长句翻译成英语,在翻译技巧上必须要用综合处理的方法:一是长句拆译,把它分成两个句子;二是把逗号分开的许多并列成分变成主从关系;三是把多个修饰成分安排为前置定语和后置定语:
对外经济贸易大学的MBA项目旨在培养
具有现代化管理意识,
掌握经营管理的知识和方法,
能有效地管理社会化大生产
并在国内外市场开展经营与竞争,
具有决策应变能力
和分析解决问题的能力,
有战略眼光和开拓进取精神的
国际导向型、务实型和复合型的
高级经营管理人才。
然后在这个基础上进行翻译:
THE MBA PROGRAM OF UIBE AIMS AT TRAINING SENIOR MANAGEMENT PERSONNEL who are internationally oriented, hands-on experienced and cross-disciplined.

With a strategic foresight and a pioneering spirit as well as decision-making and problem-solving capabilities, THEY ARE ADEPT in the theory and practice of modern management, ARE CAPABLE of applying management know-how to large-scale operations, and ARE POISED to enter into competition on domestic and international markets.

有些人就是习惯于字面上的翻译。比如有一首吟诵肇庆七星岩的诗(这个国家级风景游览区兼有"杭州之水"、"桂林之山"的美):"借得西湖水一圜,更移阳朔七堆山,堤边添上丝丝柳,画幅长留天地间。"其英译文是这样的:
Borrow a pool of water from Hangzhou West Lake,
Remove seven hills from Yangshuo for scenic sake,
And add weeping willows along the long dykes,
The nature picture will last forever under the skies.

这种"对号入座"式的翻译把诗的头两行的意思变成了:"从杭州西湖(应为Hangzhou's West Lake)借来一池水","为了风景起见(应为for scenery's sake),从阳朔把七堆山搬掉。"这与原文相去甚远。译文中其他方面的问题也不少。翻译时我们必须摆脱原文字面上的影响:
The charm of the water can match Hangzhou's West Lake.
The hills here put the Seven Mounds of Yangshuo in the shade.
Graceful are the dykes lined with rows of weeping willows,
The picturesque scenery of Seven Star Rocks will never fade.

四、要培养"精心设计、精心施工"的严谨作风

最后还有一个态度问题。我们对自己的翻译水平要有个正确的认识,要清醒地看到自己的不足和局限性。一方面我们不能把翻译工作看得过于简单;另一方面我们还要树立"精心设计、精心施工"的严谨作风。无论是对待翻译练习还是实际的翻译任务都应该如此。有一个英文的对外宣传刊物把一篇文章的标题"业主们畅游香江"(愉快地游览香港)翻译为Property Owners Had a Good Swim in the Xiangjiang River,真是令人啼笑皆非。翻译者把这篇文章翻译完之后也没有察觉出问题来。审稿人和编辑也对此无动于衷。这样的态度怎么能做好翻译工作呢?

怎样才能做到"精心设计、精心施工"呢?下面举两个例子来加以说明。第一个例子是一个短语的翻译?quot;首先以翻译"政府与民间并举,引进与输出并重,多渠道、多层次、多方位、多形式的对外文化交流格局"这个"短语"为例。其特征是一大串形容词的并列(这里共有四个"多")。这么长的一个"短语",说起来上气不接下气,变成英语就更加长了,叫人听起来"丈二和伤摸不着头脑"。如果只是简单地对它进行字面上的翻译,那么外国读者是很难理解的。

实际上,这个"短语"的翻译不仅要求我们运用符合英语习惯的词语,而且在结构上也要做些调整,表达方式上也要加以改变(当然,其前提是不改变原来的意思)。我的翻译步骤是这样的:首先是理清思路,形成一个新的框架结构;然后再寻找更为可取的表达方式来代替两个"并"字和四个"多"字:
对外文化交流格
局: An outward oriented
scenario of cultural
exchange that features ….
政府与民间并举 a two-tier pattern (government and non-government
sponsorships)
引进与输出并重 a two-way traffic (sending Chinese programs out and bringing foreign programs in)
多渠道、多层次、
多方位、多形式 a multifarious approach (through various channels, at
different levels and in diversified forms)

这样一来,我们就把两个"并"字和四个"多"字改为了a two-tier pattern (两个层次)a two-way traffic(两个方向) a multifarious approach(多种途径):an outward-oriented scenario of cultural exchange that features a two-tier pattern(government and non-government sponsorships),a two-way traffic (sending Chinese programs out and bringing foreign programs in) and a multifarious approach (through various channels, at different levels and in diversified forms)。
经过这样的处理之后,不仅语言表达比较符合英语习惯,而且内容的眉目也更加清楚,从而达到了让外国读者看了一目了然、听了能抓住要点的效果。这个翻译的过程涉及到对原文先进行整理归纳,然后再着手翻译,这不能不说是一件创造性的工作。 我们再看一个段落翻译的例子。有些中文原文在文字表述或者结构安排上有一些不尽人意的地方,我们在着手翻译之前应当对它做一些结构和顺序上的调整。我们以下面这个"邓小平理论课程简介"的翻译为例。对外宣传邓小平理论无疑是非常重要的。在翻译这样的内容时,要做到意思准确、风格得体、可读性强。下面这段文字,由于学校对外交流(交换课程设置)的需要必须将它翻译成英语。但是,通过学习和研究,发现这段中文原文的句子特别长、重复比较多?quot;邓小平理论" 重复出现了六次),而且显得缺乏条理性,逻辑性不够强:

邓小平理论概论
"本课程系统讲授邓小平理论科学体系的基本内容, 深入分析邓小平理论的思想精髓和科学内容,阐明邓小平理论的历史地位和指导意义, 阐明建设有中国特色社会主义的路线、方针和政策,帮助学生提高对高举邓小平伟大旗帜的认识水平,提高建设有中国特色社会主义道路的自觉性,提高以邓小平理论为指导研究分析我国社会主义改革开放和现代化建设理论和实践问题的能力。// 邓小平理论概论讲授的重点内容是邓小平社会主义初级阶段理论,邓小平理论的精髓,邓小平社会主义本质和根本任务的理论,邓小平社会主义改革理论,邓小平外交和对外开放理论,邓小平一国两制和祖国统一理论,邓小平社会主义市场经济理论,邓小平社会主义现代化建设的发展战略理论,邓小平社会主义民主与法制理论,邓小平社会主义精神文明建设理论,邓小平社会主义建设的领导;力量和依靠力量理论等。// 课堂教学要求努力贯彻理塾胧导氏嘟岷稀⒗?酚胂质迪嘟岷系脑?颍?η罂蒲а辖鳌⑸??行А?quot;

为了提高可读性,取得应有的宣传效果,对于这类句字长、重复多、条理差的复杂段落,我们必须对它进行必要的梳理加工,然后再分步骤地进行翻译。如果直接照翻,英语的可读性就要大打折扣。这里必须做?quot;精心设计、精心施工",精雕细刻、精益求精。

第一步, 翻译之前精心安排,突出句子的框架结构,再做一些细节上的调整:
1.邓小平理论概论
本课程系统讲授邓小平理论科学体系的基本内容;深入分析邓小平理论的思想精髓和科学内容;阐明邓小平理论的历史地位和指导意义;阐明建设有中国特色社会主义的路线、方针和政策;帮助学生提高对高举邓小平伟大旗帜的认识水平;提高建设有中国特色社会主义道路的自觉性;提高以邓小平理论为指导研究分析我国社会主义改革开放和现代化建设理论和实践问题的能力。
2.邓小平理论概论讲授的重点内容 (将顺序安排作些必要的调整,增强逻辑性)
(2)邓小平社会主义初级阶段理论,
(1)邓小平理论的精髓,
(3)邓小平社会主义本质和根本任务的理论,
(4)邓小平社会主义改革理论,
(10)邓小平外交和对外开放理论,
(11)邓小平一国两制和祖国统一理论,

努力贯彻理论与实际相结合、历史与现实相结合的原则,力求科学严谨、生动有效。

第二步, 参照有关马克思主义经济理论课程的英语原文的介绍, 了解其结构与写法, 并摘录一些有用的表达方式, 以便模仿应用(贯彻"洋为中用、外为我用"的原则):
This course involves examination of Marx's economic theory, concentrating on the theories and value and surplus value, the theory of accumulation, the theory of money and circulation, and the concept of socialism, consideration of some selected work of later Marxist economists and discussion of some criticisms of the Marxist theory.

第三步, 把有关的基本内容(上面所有用斜体标出的部分)的译文列出来:
the fundamentals of the scientific framework of Deng Xiaoping Theory
the essential thinking and scientific substance
the historical impact and guiding significance
the line, policy and strategy for building China-specific socialism
the attitude towards holding high the great banner of Deng Xiaoping

The subjects to be expounded in this course will be the pith and marrow of Deng Xiaoping Theory, concentrating on such aspects as concepts of the initial stage of socialism, the essence and fundamental tasks of socialism, the socialist reforms, the socialist market economy, the development strategy of the modernization program and the leading core and buttress force for building socialism. The course also touches on Deng Xiaoping's directives on the enhancement of democracy and the rule of law and the strengthening of the vitality of civilization, the guidelines on foreign affairs and the open policies and the concept of reunification of the motherland in the "one country-two system" context.

此译文在传达原意的前提下,还照顾到了三个方面:1. 避免了不必要的重复,控制了句子的长度;2. 调整布局,理顺思路,长句拆分,使结构上眉目清楚;3. 尽量运用一些符合英语习惯的表达方法, 使译文的可读性提高。这种经过梳理之后的翻译,避免了原文中的一些缺点,从而保证翻译的质量和效果。这个翻译过程包含了相当大的创作成分。

五、学以致用,把所学过的东西运用到翻译中去

学习英语不能只是孤立地、机械地记单词、背单词。单词、词组、短语、习语等都必须放到上下文中去理解、记忆和运用。学习英语也不能只是死记硬背语法条条,语法规则的运用必须考虑到其功能作用。做汉英翻译也不能只是简单地进行词语转换,而是在吃透和消化中文原文的基础上,去探寻英语国家人们通用的习惯表达方法。

必须承认,我们对英语的掌握是非常有限的,汉英翻译又是个十分艰巨的任务,因此在进行翻译时我们不能只是简单地依靠自己的头脑。我们必须依靠多方面的资源:第一,我们学过的确实已经掌握的那部分极为有限的知识;第二,各种有效的工具书和参考书(要不厌其烦地去查阅,包括常用的词语);第三,从广度和深度上学会利用互联网资源(包括中文和英文的网站)。互联网能为我们提供大量的知识和信息,能帮助我们解决翻译中的许多难题。这个取之不尽用之不竭的宝库如果不充分利用实在可惜。

   把中文翻译成英文,着眼点是中为外用(对外宣传的对象是外国人),切入点是洋为中用(要翻译成为外国人所喜闻乐见的语言),落脚点是学以致用(把所学过的东西运用到翻译中去)。所以关键还是在学习英语的过程中要做到有效地进行学习并且善于学以致用。

我结合英语精读课教学对学生进行中译英训练的方法叫做以课文(范文)为中心的、有指导的翻译练习(Text-based guided translation)。其原则是:贯彻洋为中用、联系实际、学以致用。要求是:训练连贯性的英语思维和表达能力,要体现出"较长的篇幅,较高的难度和较好的效果"这三个效果。 具体的构思与设计是这样的:把课文中有用的句子或段落挑选出来,联系日常的现实情况,编写出一个中文段落来,再让学生将其翻译成英文。这些编写方法可以形象地归纳为"照猫画虎"、"改头换面"、"张冠李戴"、"移植嫁接"和"什景拼盘"。这种练习实际上是一种"返向式"的翻译,是让学生去创造性地"抄书"(避免他们根据中文的字面意思去搞"对号入座"式的翻译。虽然教师要花费一定的时间和精力去构思设计翻译练习,但老师在批改作业时就可以得到回报,因为学生出现的错误尤其是"离谱"的错误很少。看到学生能把学过的东西加以学以致用,翻译效果相当不错,心里也会觉得非常高兴。 在过去三十多年的教学实践中,我一直结合精读课的教学设计以课文为范本的有指导的协作和翻译练习。学生对象主要是本科一、二年级(基础英语),也可针对高年级学生(高级英语),收获都十分明显。我教过许多非英语专业研究生的高级英语。他们大多数都是基础英语较差,不同专业和多种程度混合在一起,而且是大班上课,每班五六十人甚至七八十人,但经过我用上述方法和其他有关方法培训之后,他们的英语学习两三个月即初见成效,半年后显著见效。我批改他们做的中译英作业,开始是"满篇红"(错误太多),后来就变成了"点点红"(错误很少)了。下面是他们对这种翻译练习的评价:

尤为值得一提的是翻译练习,在别的译本与老师的译本的对比之中,略窥了翻译作为一门艺术的些许奥妙。您独具匠心的汉英翻译为我们揭开了一种书本上找不到的思路。
"貌离神合"的汉英翻译技巧 - 进行翻译时字面上看起来似乎与原文相差甚远,但实际上却紧扣原意,且滋味甚浓。
采用了新的学习方法,改正了一些学习英语的坏习惯,培养了一些好习惯,收获很大."有指导的应用"令我们耳目一新。"精心设计,精心施工"的教学方法和要求,对我也有很大的启发。
我收益最大的是您的"照猫画虎"。我平时接触的地道英语实在太少了,所以经常说一些中国式的英语,贻笑大方。通过新的学习方法,学到了原汁原味的英语。

这些评语都是发自学生内心的感言, 说明他们通过有效的教学方法(汉英翻译只是其中的一部分)在英语学习上确实取得了明显的进步。所以我认为,以课文为范本的有指导的模仿运用这样的写作和翻译练习, 是培训学生汉英翻译能力的一种行之有效的方法。这种方法完全可以应用到个人自学当中去。

A good example of bad translations

Be cautious to send your kids to study abroad

It gets more and more popular to send teenagers to study abroad, and the number increases in an astonished rate. Usually their parents have an unrealistic understanding of foreign education. After attending exhibitions on education by the foreign universities and colleges, which show how fantastic the schools are, they are easily convinced and take the real actions.

However it not always turns out a good thing for the children to study abroad. Many students lack the ability to adjust themselves, so it becomes very hard for them to get used to the new environments. Due to the hardness to adapt, they have less ability to survive in the unfamiliar foreign surroundings. They are impacted by the “culture shock”. Without enough observation ability, they cannot understand behaviors of the local people, so they are unable to become a part of them. The lack of communication makes them feel lonely.

Feeling lonely and incapable taking care of their lives (because of parents’ spoiling), the young students often trap in homesickness and low mood. More importantly, without sound foundation, they cannot deal with the study in foreign languages. Lacking the abilities to study independently, they are unable to make expected progress.

Therefore, many students quit before graduations, giving up the precious study opportunities. So It might not a good idea to send student to study abroad when they are too young.

If you want your children to see the outside world, you can let them attend short period study abroad in groups. They can live in foreign homes, take summer vacation classes and travel around. But there must be special instructors with these groups to accompany them, and give directions and help all the way.

Many students  lack  adaptability and flexibility that they hardly immerge into the new  circumstances, they may enounter the  cultural shock. Without necessary insight,they can’t understand the behaviors of foreigners , which makes them can’t get along well with local people. And they would feel lonely because of the absence of adaptability and communication. The dependence on their parents and self-isolation which the result of the spoil from the parents will make them homesick and feel down.  more importantly  they can’t get the expected progress ,for they neither have laid a solid foundation in study nor adapt the local laguages atmosphere  . Then some of them may give up the valuable opportunity on the halfway. Therefore, it is not always a good chance to send the children to study abroad. If you want to let children require more knowledge about the world, they can join the short-term international study project with other members. They can live in the foreign families,and take part in the study of summer courses,or take part in  some traveling activities .All of the groups must be accompanied with professional tutors who can offer guidance and help about all the route.
