Motivation is perhaps the key that leads to continued success in the learning process, and how to motivate students has long been a recurring challenge for the classroom teacher of every discipline. CLOSE UP is the pictorial text where photographs are used as the motivating element that will lead to both written and oral communication in English in the EFL classroom.
The old, somewhat trite, proverbial observation that a picture speaks more than a thousand words is still applicable in the language classroom – to motivate, to stimulate, to arouse interest, or to pique the imagination of the viewer. From that hoped-for-effect, what should follow in the language learning process is a student-centered activity that produces some \"real\" language, either written or oral.
Close-up: A Photomotivational Text presents a kind of visual variety show which is meant to be enjoyed even as learning takes place. Because students are asked to contribute of themselves in response to visual stimuli, interest level should remain high. It consists of four sections: Photographs into Paragraphs, \"The Seeing Eye\" and Analysis, Generative Composition, Character Studies They are intended to generate various ideas but aimed at consolidate both writing and oral skills at high levels of EFL training.
The end product is student-generated and student-created, and the intellect is invited to play an active part. Insights will come from \"what's in sight,\" and language growth will be manifested by the sense of accomplishment that students experience.
CLOSE UP is a standalone publication, but nevertheless one might enjoy some of the outstanding manuals which have been posted on ET previously
