Meaning: out of difficulty / danger

Example: \"While his transplant operation was a success, Kevin is not out of
the woods yet.\"

Origin: probably from old days when one can get lost in the woods. Thus,
get out of the woods and you can't get lost any more. Also, any beasts in
the woods tend not to come out, so if you can get out of the woods your
danger is reduced.
