THE stereotypical young Chinese life might be said to run like this: study hard in school, graduate from college, find a job, get married and raise a family. These days, however, more young people are straying from this path and choosing to marry immediately after graduation, according to a recent China Youth Daily report.

The newspaper spoke with some officials from a marriage registration office in Shanghai's Xuhui District. The office registered 809 marriages of graduates below the age of 24 in 2005, and 1,221 in 2006. Some sociologists point out that many people want to get married right after graduating because they're not able to make that first step into full independence. Experts say that financial stability should come before marriage. However, others say that marriage can instill a sense of responsibility in a young couple, and that the marriage will be more stable because they can stand by each other through thick and thin.

Do you think that getting married right after graduation is wise?

No, I don't think so.

Most of the youth who get married after graduating have no responsibility sense, they don't know how to live together with a balanced, self-effacing environment, many of them don't wash their own clothes, but just leave them to their parents, their parents will come to their house at weekends, wash clothes, do some cleaning for them. So I think they are still big children.
