About "how long"

Let's have a look:

A. when     B. What time   C. how long   D. How many
The key is “C”.

My question is:
Can “how long” be used together with the instant verb “go to school”?

They say "how long" is used together with a continuous verb, However, "go to school" is for "an instant verb phrase". I have no idea why.

I don't think "go" is an instant verb in this case, even I don't know why.
