DO college students still need to develop speaking and writing skills in their mother tongue?

The Ministry of Education answered that question with a loud \"yes\" when it said all universities and colleges have to provide Chinese language and literature courses.

As a result, some universities, including Peking, Tsinghua and Nankai, have made Chinese compulsory for all their students, including those in science and engineering, Beijing Morning Post reported last week.

Some welcome this move, saying that a dose of Chinese learning will help young people retain a sense of who they are, as their culture faces the threat of globalization. It's also time to counterbalance the national English frenzy, they say.

Others, mostly students, complain that being forced to study Chinese is just another burden. They say there's no need to continue learning Chinese after elementary and high school.

So, do you think Chinese should be compulsory at universities?

That's for sure, as Chinese is our mother tongue. Students are supposed to get some diea of this, and cultivate their sense of beauty between the lines.
