NIH Reviews Death in Gene Therapy Study
All Things Considered, September 17, 2007 • Scientists at the National Institutes of Health are trying to decide whether gene therapy could be implicated in the death of a woman who was participating in a study that used gene therapy to treat rheumatoid arthritis.
No conclusions were reached at a meeting Monday, but more tests will be done on tissue samples. The group of NIH scientists will meet again in December, when they hope to conclude whether gene therapy played a role in the patient's death.
Targeted Genetics, one of many companies that are trying to develop gene therapy, sponsored the study in which the patient died. The company says that when the facts are in, its gene therapy treatment will be exonerated.
Targeted Genetics
