a grammar question

When I was checking for a word on Yahoo's dictionary page. I found a sentence
which says \"He complained to the police of the boys stealing his apples.\"
I wonder if in this sentence that something is overlooked? Otherwise, why \"the
boys\" in the sentence can be straight followed by a verbal noun?
Can someone help me to figure out this? TIA

I think it should be "He complained to the police of the boy's stealing his apples."
