The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is expected to issue a warning today, cautioning women against genital cosmetic surgeries with names like “vaginal rejuvenation” and “designer vaginoplasty,” the WSJ reports.

The surgeries have been featured on TV shows including Dr. 90210 on the E! network. But many gynecologists warn the the techniques — which some doctors claim can improve sexual fulfillment as well as changing the appearance of the genetalia — are unproven and carry risks including infection, scarring, nerve damage and loss of sensation.

“To do this for cosmetic reasons, and to say it will improve sexual fulfillment is totally absurd,” Thomas Stovall, past president of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons and a clinical professor at the University of Tennessee at Memphis, told the WSJ.

The surgeries range in cost from $3,500 to $20,000. David Matlock, a Los Angeles gynecologist who is one of the best known doctors performing the procedures, declined to be interviewed by the WSJ.
