If one sound defines Glasgow, it’s the
banging and hammering of industry
on the River Clyde. On the north bank
of the river, the giant Finnieston crane
is a powerful reminder of Glasgow’s skill in
shipbuilding. Giant ships like the Lusitania and
Queen Elizabeth II were built here. Along the
river, though, the future of Glasgow is taking
shape in the form of new hotels, flats and
corporate headquarters. The stylish steel arch of
the Finnieston Bridge marks the first new road
over the Clyde for more than 30 years. Upriver,
